Psa Do not get hacked

In the span of 3 days, 4 members of my alliance have been hacked. Previous to that, my friend, a YouTuber, was also hacked.

Within a span of a week, 5 people that I know were hacked. These are people who've invested hundreds/thousands into the game and are smart enough to know not to download and visit weird sites. I don't know what the correlation is or how it's happening, but I suggest you guys secure your information and lock your items.

Also, l do not visit tinyuurl links as they can carry malicious things in them.

The most recent hacking that's currently going on as I post this ticket; the victim has locked his items for 30 days and the hacker is currently frustrated as he cannot steal the items.

This is simply a PSA. Lock your items with the free locks and make sure to secure your password and do scheduled virus scans.

EDIT:
Two notes. First, do not share your info. The victims in my alliance did not share any info but they were still hacked. Nonetheless, it's important to note that sharing your info is a horrible idea.
Second, If you buy item locks, only buy 7-30 day locks and don't buy 90 day locks unless it's an item such as a sweetvvater tattoo that's untradable anyways.

Stop sharing your passwords and change the passwords you use for sites you visit (basil, ms, etc) regularly

Yep, the only one that costs nx is the full year long one. You don't even need that as 90 days is plenty long enough to allow you deal with a situation where you're being hacked. Even 30 days is probably fine. The 7 day one is a bit too short, I never use it myself...the rest of my items are locked for either 30 or 90 days. A useful thing to do as well is buy a lock and place it on a random equip on every character you consider important to you. By just having an item with an item lock in your character inventory it prevents anyone from deleting that character as long as the item lock still exists. This way you can sort of lock your characters to prevent someone from just trying to delete your chars for whatever jerk reason they're motivated by.

Yea, that's true but considering how the hacker is currently selling the victim's items for a fraction of the price in the free market and the fact that he's doing paypal transactions with other people, I doubt it's fake since they wouldn't be able to take their items back and there's no real gain or positive to "faking" their hacking.

I also see that people are speculating about how the hacks may have happened.

I don't know but all I will say is simply: Lock your items.

This is a situation where intentionally overthinking it and being paranoid is actually a reasonable thing to do and in the end is more likely than not to leave you in a better position than approaching it with cynicism and reckless abandon in an effort to appear cool and unconcerned. As far as I'm concerned I have no clue what limitations apply to anyone trying to hack accounts and my gut feeling says that anyone who thinks they know the extent of the possibilities is lacking a basic sense of humility and giving themselves too much credit. In my mind anything is possible so any measure of caution is justified and being paranoid is pretty much the only reasonable approach to take with regards to something you value personally as much as the average Mapler values their gear and account. If you respect it enough to put this much effort towards it then respect it enough to simply err on the side of caution and take the time to protect it. It's not like having an item locked longer than you want is that big of a sacrifice to make...these measures of protection really don't amount to very much in the end and they're easy enough to take with minimal drawbacks.

I always got the impression I was being silly and paranoid by locking my items...always seemed like I was the only person I know who locked anything whatsoever. Nice to know I'm not, lol. My stuff is always locked and never for just 7 days. If I take an item seriously enough to have made it then I can respect the item enough to wait 90 days before I sell it to someone else. Not like it's going do anything worse than annoy me in the end...which is a heck of a lot better than losing it against my will.

@AntiSenpai It's probably the memory leak. This is a occasional reoccurring issue. You should also change your info. As I stated earlier I have in fact seen on of these files from a good while back. It basically has thousands of accounts... and the hacker has to go account hunting. But if they can find your email using skype for example then they can fast track to your info.

@AntiSenpai: We're the only ones to announce it so far, and naturally we only know about people in our friend circle who've been hacked. I don't share my info with anyone, and I can't speak for everyone but I believe that's the case with most people whose accounts are worth thousands of dollars.

Mmm, it's a bit weird that it's really only happening to you guys though

From my perspective it seems like someone who was very trusted had all of your guy's info, but then I don't think you of all people would give your info out to anyone, no matter the circumstances.

Either way, I hope things work out for all that were hacked!

@Undexme It's impossible to be able to hack anyone at any moment due to Nexon having a firewall as well as their own software updates and server maintenances... (Unless they're like a no life CIA class h4x0r with hours/days/weeks to commit to the hack)... Anyways with a almost completely up-to-date memory leak file ("Memory dump" ) he could hack anyone that hasn't changed their info since he managed to pull the data.

@Klytta: I'm also leaning towards a database leak on Nexon's part. I haven't downloaded or clicked anything suspicious; in fact, I have barely logged on in the last two weeks since I'm traveling overseas. The hacker also claims to be able to "hack anyone". While I normally wouldn't give a second thought to such a claim, I have to admit it seems like a real possibility in the wake of recent events.

@Rachelll: I see. From what I hear a few Beran people have been hacked as well. But I know that most of the "rich" or "famous" Mapler's know one another. It could be either or at this point. However if this is a chain hacking from someone using skype/TS then they must have spread the virus, jumped to a new person's skype, and repeated for a good while then pulled all the account info at once. Normally you'd see the hackings take place days-weeks apart if it was a virus going around.

P.s. Don't trust people right now. If this is the case someones pretending to be someone else.

@76WaysToDie Yeah one at a time. Best way to do it is to buy the 7day and 30 day. Then lock two items at a time using those. Never 90day unless you'll be keeping it forever. It's just too long.

Reply June 2, 2015 - edited

@Undexme: Then I'd have to lean towards this being a memory leak on Nexon's behalf. The only other possibility that would make sense is if all these people knew one another. Aka they are all skype friends or someone popular has them or most of them on skype. And the person just hacked a bunch from someones skype he originally hacked, and then moved on to the next skype and group of friends... and so on. I've seen this happen too. Worst possible thing ever is a hacker hacking skype accounts and sending out RATs to everyone.

@CherryTigers This sounds like a memory dump. Change your info. It's not the first time this has happened. I've actually seen a old memory dump log from long ago... it's basically a sheet with thousands of account names/emails passwords and PICs. [Account | Pass | PIC ] I guess hackers somehow pull it from Nexon.

@lostreality Hacking over skype is one of the easiest ways. They can send you a link or a .exe file that is labeled a .jpq in the file name to make it look like a picture. Or they simply steal your skype info and look through your chats for information.

you can get easily hacked if someone knows your email and basic personal info like your name/bday via live gm chat. I was hacked this way, probably by a real life friend, about a year ago. keylogging isnt the only way to get hacked

I can confirm this as I was one of the ones hacked. I'm currently overseas and haven't even logged on in weeks, and I'm almost certain that I could not possibly have gotten myself keylogged. This points to a larger problem at hand here; it can't just be a coincidence that several high-profile players in Windia have all been hacked within the last week.

Keep your items locked and your accounts safe, folks.

You don't necessarily have to download things from weird sites. If your friends shared their account info with anyone, and the medium in which it was shared was hacked (ex: skype) they could hack any accounts that had their info shared through it. This happened in my world, and resulted in a few high profile people being hacked
