D&D is literally only limited by your imagination; that's about as general as I can get.

@Cincinna There has to be a ton of sites on the Internet that give the basics in a lot better form than someone trying to kick out a "tl;dr" on something as complex as Dungeons & Dragons.
It's not the kind of thing that can be explained in a sentence.

But basically a group of people, usually 4 or 6 or so get together and choose 1 person as the "Dungeon Master" who doesn't actually play in the party but who "runs" the game by making up the story or by using a pre-made story (you can buy D&D "campaigns" all set up and ready to play). The Dungeon Master creates the maps of where the adventure takes place, including any forests, castles, dungeons and so on, and tells the story as the party of the other players moves through that world.

Each player has a character you create ahead of time by rolling special dice with from 4 to 20 sides, depending on the odds for each thing you're "rolling".
This sets your characters stats at the start of the game. The Dungeon Master may provide set equipment items to each player, or you can roll to see if you get things to start out with.

As you encounter monsters the party can fight, using all the regular stuff you're used to from Maplestory (weapons, magic, armor, etc).
The battles are done turn by turn, all the players and monsters taking turns based on their stats (speed, initiative, spell buffs if any, etc) and each rolls the appropriate dice to see if they hit and for how much damage. The Dungeon Master rolls for the monsters. The outcome of the battle is calculated based on the rolls, your stats and the monster's stats.
At the end of the battle you can also roll for gold or equips dropped by the monsters (assuming you're still alive).

Main point should be obvious by now- D&D is SLOW. Very, very SLOW. It can take an hour just to work your way through a single battle if it's complex and involves a lot of players and monsters.
Be prepared for this- it's not a fast moving game.

Hopefully someone in your group has experience so they can explain all the nit-picking little details and has a set of the special dice and a rule book.
Bring a pad of paper and something reliable to write with, it's all based around writing stuff down to keep track of everything. The "action" goes on in your head.

Okay, so, it's kinda like... uggh it's kinda hard to explain. I skype dungeon and dragons with my friends over the weekends if you want to join I could probably give you the basics.
