@coralviner:

If you haven't yet, open your inventory, go to Cash tab and double click the Auto HP pet skill.

Open the Equipment UI and go to the Pet tab. You will see your active pets there and empty slots. Find the slot which says HP, drag your potion in there. A window pops up and you can adjust the % of your HP when it needs to consume a potion. If you put it on 100%, it will use a potion after every hit, if you set it to 50%, it will use a potion when your HP reaches half HP.

Remember Auto HP is there only to support you and it isn't to replace your manual potting. So you still need to be aware of your HP and manual use a potion when you need it.

Auto pot will fail when you are using buffs, flash jumps and other potions (consumables) when the Pet wants to use a potion. So pay attention to that, and you will be fine.

You will die less with Auto HP, that's for sure.

To be honest, I myself don't really know why as well but what I do know (and I hope this helps) is that night lords are considered the most squishy classes in the maplestory game. For me I usually carry a Big Red Snail familiar just to be safe. Hope this helps

The defense stat in your character stats window and reading his skills and your skills especially in second job would help you find the answer to your question as to why there's a big difference between damage taken with relatively same gears.

As for how you deal with it, you use potions.
