.Hack Vs Sword Art Online

Okay, so I am here creating this thread today because I have seen & heard one too many people that boast about how "amazing" SAO is as compared to .Hack, yet they have never even watched/played a single shred of it. There honestly isn't much to compare between the two other than the fact that both have their characters trapped inside of the game(which is arguably .Hack's idea & many argue that SAO is even a .Hack rip-off but even I, a .Hack loyal fan, would not go that far), but that honestly does not appear to have to same connection to the story. I've watched all of SAO and was totally HOOKED the first few episodes, but after that it kinda went down hill but I finished it anyway just so I could see what happened to everyone. It started off soo good...

So I went lounging around & perusing through forums & threads here & there to grab hold of some peoples' opinions and statements and this is what I've come up with thus far:

"Sword Art is good but becomes FAR too cheesy, cliche', & pointless towards the middle of the series to even the end of the series, especially the Fairy Arc that totally threw it off for most of us. Hell, it even contained your typical, MEDIOCRE oni-chan BS crap about his kid sister falling inlove with him! Oh, haven't heard THAT one before!
there are just too many things to nitpick and too many things to roll my eyes at.
"It's not bad. It's just not terribly good either. I'd still recommend this series for people who want a Fantasy Sci-Fi Romp. But, hell. even .hack//Roots has told a better story than SAO in the number of episodes they've expended. So why was this anime so over-hyped again?..."

This is what users had to say about .Hack thus far:

" .hack// relied on the real world as well as the game world to tell it's story. SAO's set itself to only be able to rely on one of them, and memories/hopes of the other. I liked .Hack because of the interesting story-line & how attached you could become to the complex characters. I felt that the story & characters had a direct impact on you, as a person, and gave you so much to learn from by the end of the series. Etc etc etc...

So, in your opinion.. which do you guys prefer IF you've seen both? Personally I'd have to go with .Hack because, well, not only did I grow up with it in the early 2000s but it was COMPLETELY original by a long-shot, not to mention those characters. And although the original web novel for SAO was released just a FEW months BEFORE .Hack's, there is still no telling who's concept came before who's..

OH AND BTW Haseo>Kirito by a LOOOOONG shot.

Both boring but SAO offends me very much. Log Horizon is boring also in their effort to be comical?

.HACK was terrible, but that doesn't mean SAO was good either. They both suck respectively. SAO popular only because of the hype.
Plot revolves around MMO mechanics, NPC factions that seemed to have gained sentience with the new patch, guild politics, c@ts, low-level scrubs in dungeons, an adorable ninja midget, and actually playing the game.
Don't forget scheming villains with glasses

Where's the Log Horizon option.

MC and co get stuck in an MMO and make the best of it. A lot of stuff is unknown, as a new patch was implemented when they were trapped inside, and they can't read the patch notes because they're in the goddamn game.

This, only because I have yet to watch .hack, and I quite enjoy anime that have a political element to them. (eg. Gundam Unicorn)
Haven't watch .hack yet so I'm not sure. I haven't really heard many people say great things about it so it's not really something I'd plan to watch either. SAO was decent in my opinion, not as great as fans said or as bad as haters said.
It's more of a gaming franchise than an anime. There are animes for both Project.hack and .hack Conglomerate, but they're prequels and fillers. The real story's in the games which are amazing.
