GDC 2013 Oculus Rift Tuscany Razer Hydra Demo Handson

Chat

Is this the future of gaming?

Oculus rift developer kits were just shipped out at the beginning of this month. It hasn't been long since people got their hands on this thing and they've already come up with some pretty cool stuff. For example

And this

I really believe that oculus rift will change how we game when a consumer version comes out in the future. I know Nintendo tried it before and they failed miserably but technology advanced tremendously since then. I think using the razer hydra with the oculus rift would be pretty cool. I'm sure they'll figure out better more accurate ways to track motion of the hands in the future. What do you guys think about this?
True something like TF2 is very similar to paintballing but what about the fantasy games like Skyrim, Zelda etc. There's nothing you can do right now that resembles those kinds of games.
In my head if I wanted a virtual Zelda I would need a whole room to jump around in like the holodeck from ST:TNG. At least that's how I play zelda in my imagination.
Someone in this thread said an aracde could support something like that. I remember when aracdes had that exact set up from the second video 10 years ago, but I forget the game.
I read about that eyepiece before. They said it causes headaches after long usage.
But I can't believe they're selling it now. o.o
The consumer version won't be released until 2014 for sure. As for the headaches and dizziness, they fixed most of that issue. Sure you'll get a headache the first or second time. But when you start using it more and more you'll be used to it and it'll stop happening. Also, this isn't even the final version.
I don't debate that it isn't a great advance in gaming technology, but I couldn't have any less interest in it.
Motion controls and something strapped to my face seems just awful to me. Again Im not saying it isn't amazing but I would rather go paint balling then do what it in the second vid. This will be llike the nintendo stuff, a gimmick.
Yeah I was thinking that arcades would open up with these set up all over the place and you can get like a big game going of whatever game is popular at the time and do like an 8v8 game and charge people like $10 an hr. As for space in a common household, you're right it does take up a lot of space but it's probably the best way to do it (for now).

Sooo basically a revamped VirtualBoy? it's a better concept but with eye goggles like that you could only play for maybe an hour or2 before getting a massive headache. The actual moving and running may both attract and deter players. I dunno, i'd have to test it myself, but i don't exactly see it becoming a popular household system

No, it looks like it takes waay too much space to set-up.
I mean, I could see arcades become more popular like this, but not the traditional households.

Next thing u know, the video game characters actually become reality.

I'd hate to see those maplestory characters that don't have clothes on in real life.

That looks very dumb tbh.
I mean, I know it will probably happen, but I hope it's a more efficient way than having a giant screen in your face.

Eww, lots of moving. I would rather press a button/key with my thumbs and fingers.
