Racism on MapleStory

Hello Maplers,

It's been a while since I came back to play MS again (after a break of 6 years), and I've noticed that people are being kinda mean and racist to me for having a 'black' skin on MS.
I get whispers often of people telling me why im black, calling me 'blacky' or defaming me for having that tan skin on MS. Im actually half Dutch, half South American (Suriname native indian to be exact) and I'm proud of my roots and skin! Also, in the old days it seemed there were a lot more characters rocking that tan skin, so I wonder what happened that everyones so about skin colors nowadays?
I've been bullied and picked on when I was a teenager at highschool for having a dark skin and living in a 'white' area, It took many years to get over it so I'm really not looking for negative attention like this. I know I should ignore it and let them be, but sometimes it really makes me sad 'cause it's happening quite frequently now..
To give you an example, I added a pic of someone being offensive and rude about my skin tone on MS (Sorry I cant make normal SS on this laptop so took the pic with my phone).

http://imgur.com/a/fRJQ2

Anyways, I want to take action but I don't even know where to start.. What are your opinions about having a dark skin on MS, people finding it 'rare' to have that skin and being offensive about it?
What should I do? ._.

To express frustration and annoyance I have with people that rely on demonizing other people en lieu of dealing with their own shortcomings.
Twas cathartic.

Yo, I think he was just fwy. I haven't encountered this in a long time but I either fw them back or I ignore them. Sometimes I'll screen shot and report it via ticket system. That can help.
Sorry this happened to you, dutchdelight.
Racism is basically no different than any other reason anyone is gonna pick to dismiss you without regard for who you are. Sure it's a bit more intimidating given that you can see it coming in packs based similarly along racial lines (and often enough for such assumptions to have value) but in the end its still the same. As long as there aren't laws enforcing it and you're not being literally injured because of it...you're pretty much just being a baby if you dwell on it. Those are some pretty big conditions, tho, but more often than not in modern society you're going to be held back by prejudice for intensely personal reasons (which carry as much objective value as any race based prejudice does) like: reminding a specific person of someone that bullied or simply annoyed them at some juncture in their life, etc...than you are to be held back by actual racism. We've pretty much, naively, rendered that sort of thing as being almost as evil as a violent crime... It isn't. It's just a more standardized reason to hold a prejudice than things like doing the same if someone smells or looks like your ex boyfriend.

Don't be a baby. Racism is basically institutionalized prejudice...and, more often than not, in modern society...racism is just an institutionalized excuse for being a baby. I hate how it seems like what used to be a truly meaningful cause seems to have deteriorated into a mess that propagates itself because it's an easy way to blame your own personal inadequacies on on something outside yourself.

I've experienced relatively extreme examples of racism several times in my life and in each time (there were 3)...as soon as I saw it for what it was it was a lot easier to deal with by simply sucking it in and figuring out a proactive means to get past it. I'm not really very sympathetic to ppl trying to doll up their attempts to be victims.

Insofar as actual racism goes...I find myself being more affected by anti-semitism for some reason. I know I shouldn't...as it's no different than any other prejudice (and I'm not a jew or Israeli, lol)...but for whatever reason anti-semitism and racism against Israeli's gets me worked up, lol. Just sharing that so I don't come across as holier than thou or whatever. Being able to point out the flaws in racism is a lot easier than dealing with racism when you're naturally sensitive to it. But it's still no excuse to be a baby.
um... why?

I used to be sensitive to racist remarks...until I learned how effective staying on a level playing field is. Staying calm either confuses them or makes them so upset they just bail.

...Sometimes we even become friends. It's strange.

I seen only one situation with racism in maple, it was when I was talking to one of my friends(he was the black guy being insulted) but I haven't seen too much of it other than that, all you can really do is report them for harassment, if I ever experienced it i'd just ignore it, most who attack people with insults are the real unfortunate ones anyways.

When I was younger, I was bullied too, for different reasons but I concur it wasn't a very fun time, 10 years of bullying, I guess I can kinda feel your pain in the past.

Thanks everyone for the support, kind messages, replies and advice! I didn't come across this problem while playing on my Night Walker with a tanned skintone. The people who were being racist to you, I think they know each other or possibly the same person. I am also Dutch But indeed just take screenshots and report them. The evidence is there, they can't get away with this.

Peeps will always be racist, and the sad part is there really is no stopping it even after so many years of nonsense. If the whispers get out of hand you can always blacklist them, blacklist is case sensitive, and that will prevent them from whispering you.

Just got to ignore them and do your thing there is a special place for those rood peeps. =p

I hate this "racism isn't going away any time soon" attitude...
Yes we can't force people to accept things, that I get.
But they should be punished for harassing people.
Did you happen to report him? I'd just report people like this and not even respond or give them the time of day.
I know that I've never experienced this kinda ish and never will, so I hope I don't sound ignorant.
Just keep being you. Forget the jerks. You rock and your heritage sounds really interesting.

It's sad to see someone have to go through this while trying to relax and play a game. I also have gone through very similar situations on Maplestory and many other MMORPGS (unfortunately). Being harassed because of skin color (or other parts of one's appearance) is just unacceptable! The best thing to do is report them and get a good screen shot as evidence. After that just ignore them, I think people like that feed off of negative attention.

Report them.

Anyone who feels that another person is inferior to them based on skin color--in game or irl--needs to go sit in a corner and reflect.
You do realize that you can report these players...

When they say something offensive in chat to you and you're still in game, report conversation. A log will be made of the conversation and the mods will look into it. In your case, take the screenshot, go to Nexon's website and log a ticket under Report Abuse > Misconduct.

Likewise, @apall can report the PB KSers for Harrassment and Misconduct, since both apply. It'd be best to use Harrassment first for this, since the mods have already been alerted towards PB KSers lately (in fact, two weeks ago, I sent a report into them for a similar issue... not one of those guilds, however). Despite popular belief, they got back to me about the issue in a day (not counting their automated messages). I don't know if the user himself was punished, but I hadn't seen him since.
The in game reporting system has been broken since forever.. haha it stated that on website a while ago. and its a hassle/waste of 2x to go submit your screenshots on website haha. Comments don't bother me, but I state my point due to the fact that these harmful racial slurs obviously bothers others. The one thing that does definitely bother me though is ksing, ruins gameplay. Babilatinos is famous for it, they have smegas about them all the time.

I'm sure that person was just trolling or in desperate need of a colored friend. But either way you should submit that ss and report him/her to get them banned. That'll teach em' a lesson! I haven't really noticed racism in game other than joking around. (Or are they joking...hmmm, just kidding) but if these kids find you important enough that they would go out of their way to get your attention then enjoy the compliment. Usually actual racists are pretty uneducated people. I'll leave you with two inspirational quotes from Caitlin Jenner:

That kinda makes me sad, 'cause as a teenager I literally cried in front of a mirror questioning myself why I wasn't white. I LOL at that now, but still people, regardless of what kind of skintone, shouldn't ashamed/embarassed or even thinking about their skin's being 'ugly'... It sickens me that racism teach people that their own skin is 'ugly' and white is 'superior' and considered as normal.

@dbanbaruk Thanks you all for your advice I guess you're all right, there's nothing to do against this besides reporting (Thanks, I figured out how to report him and have done that). I was just honestly curious if it was just me, or it looks like that racism in MS is a bit more present than it was in the old days. Maybe it just appears to me like that 'cause I'm getting all these random 'attacks' so often lately, while I haven't experienced that before. I also wanted to know if other people are being harrassed about skintones on MS.These experiences won't let me stop playing Maple and I will rock that tan skin tone

Best Advice I can give you: Continue to play and ignore it or choose not to play.
Racism isn't going away anytime soon, and maplestory, being a game like any other will attract the same immature 10-15 year old anti social fat brats population as games like call of duty do.
It's people feeling empowered behind the protection of a computer screen and to be honest, it's very hard to get to them, especially in a computer game such as Maple that has gone from social to individual without care for any other.

Racism has and will always be around unfortunatly. Especially when areas get crowded during 2x and ks wars break out.. I know for the all the recent 2x events while I was training on link skill mules and weak chars like my PB, I've had my channels stolen by big guilds such as "Teased", "Wonderland" and mainly "BaBiLaTiNoS", and you wouldn't believe the things that these people say. The racism and "I hope you get cancer" comments were not fit during these is wars, I wish people would just think about what they say and the harm it can do before they say it.
