In the Mercedes storyline the original Wing in Ellinia calls Mercedes a human because the elves vanished hundreds of years ago.
It would be easier for him to assume she was a human than to figure the elves that hadn't been along for a long time (also from before his birth since he's apparently only 21 years old) had returned.
