God Eater Ep 1

Thoughts?

Wasn't nearly as awesome as I was hoping. It just had this incoherent feel from how fast it was moving and it kinda bugged me. Kinda cool premise I guess but nothing I haven't seen a billion other times in other movies, shows, and video games. Art style was pretty slick, but the music was doo doo. And the OP/ED really blew imo. Lastly, I'm starting to get tired of the male protagonists being the usual, reckless "I'm gonna save everybody and be a stupid teen like every other show!".

Aside from the art style, this seemed like it was done by a different studio altogether. Well we'll see in the upcoming episodes if this show falls flat but still gets praise by the blind loyal Ufotable fans, or if it will actually be good.

Speaking of manga, God Eater doesn't have one. Technically it does, but it's a manga that serves to connect the events of the first GE game with its sequel, GE2. There's another manga on GE, but it's completely different from the game and this anime, being a spin-off with completely different characters.

I can kinda see the game as the "manga" (using this term loosely) of the anime, as the first episode stays faithful to some events, although it adds stuff like the training simulator sessions Renka was in (the main character in the game was an avatar you can customize to represent yourself), and the dual-direction Aragami invasion. However, it's not exactly a fair comparison imo because video game cutscenes are paced differently from anime.

Looking back in terms of a gameplay perspective, I bet Renka could've escaped the Ogretails and Kongous surrounding him if he simply used a Stun Grenade and ran for his God Arc. I mean, the game gives you a fair amount to use right at the beginning...
Although I still read, the manga isn't that great either too tbh. The whole "edgy" appeal of no one being safe wears out fast, especially when you don't exactly care much for most of the characters.
Oh ok. I've never actually read the manga either. Just heard tons of fans say it was "good" lol. Kind of like that whole vampire cafe show anime that was on last season or whatever. I can't think of the name because the show was so bad. It was hyped because of the manga, but omg the anime.....

They did stay faithful to the original game, but also built upon it too, adding things like that training simulator part with Renka and Kota, and that Aragami invasion. That being said...

- I feel like it kinda relies on the audience playing the game it was derived from.
They do keep parts like Tsubaki Amamiya telling the protagonist and Kota to begin training at 1200 hours (though it was technically 1500 hours in the game), Kota trying to share a pack of gum but realizing he ran out, and Soma's first words when he sees the protagonist. As for the music, I was disappointed that they didn't really use much of the original tracks the game had from Go Shiina, and also, why couldn't they use Over The Clouds (by Alan Dawa Dolma) as the OP, like the game did for its animated intro? In terms of pacing, the game paces a lot faster, as for example, the training simulator part is just an optional tutorial you could do.

- About the part where Renka transforms his sword to a gun, that's an actual thing that a New-Type (not to be confused with NewTypes from Gundam) God Eater like him can do.
Lindow, Soma, Kota, and Sakuya are all classified as Old-Types, so their God Arcs are Blade/Shield form (Lindow and Soma) or Gun form (Kota and Sakuya) only, being unable to swap between both forms like a New-Type could. They don't exactly provide quite a lot of exposition, so they didn't really describe what a New-Type is (yet). I feel like it's going for a "show-not-tell" way of storytelling imo, but I may be off on that. Hope it won't fall off...

- In comparison to the game, in the beginning, you go on a mission with Lindow (the guy who casually walked down giving orders while smoking and slashing Aragami left and right, literally), who helps you fight your first Ogretail (the small white bipedal grunt Aragami). Then you go on missions meeting with Sakuya, Soma, and Kota individually.
However, in the anime, Renka rashly decides to deploy himself alone when there's a full-on Aragami invasion from two directions, then after losing his God Arc and getting surrounded, he gets his butt saved by Lindow, Soma, and Sakuya. During the Aptitude Test, where Renka got his God Arc armlet, he didn't get his God Arc until he met Licca in the storage room after the training simulation, unlike in the game, where after the test, you get your weapon once the armlet is installed. He should've used that God Arc instead of the provided one in the simulation, training with transforming from Blade/Shield to Gun form for the right situations and building up to the part where he suddenly transforms his God Arc to shoot that Kongou away from that civilian.

- As for the flashback scenes, it depicts Johannes Von Schicksal, Paylor Sakaki, and Aisha Gauche, during the Managarm Project, doing their Oracle Cell research and having a discussion about creating the first God Eater to fight the Aragami. I still felt like they should've reserved this part for later however, like the game did, to avoid confusion.

The next episode, looking at its title, looks like it'll be based on the part of the game where Lindow trains the protagonist. I get that the Aragami invasion in this episode adds tension, but it probably would've been better if we known the 1st Unit members some more before it happened. Hopefully it improves more in the next 2-4 episodes (and apparently, there's only gonna be 13 episodes for this series)... I'd say it's quite good, but they could've executed some parts better.
