can a student date a professor?

In college, can a student and a professor date each other? Is there anything wrong with students dating faculty members?

@SoIntoYou yeah, we new each other for several years before Basil existed. I'm not really concerned about the mod/Basiler relationship thing though lol. I was just answering sparkshooter's question to me.

The main reason I made this thread was b/c of something I saw in a TV with a high school senior dating a college professor. Granted, the college professor is young (and quite dashing). But she just looks so young that it makes me uncomfortable when they have romantic scenes together.
Our official university policy on student and professor/TA relationships is NO. Faculty members are forbidden from having consensual personal relationships with any student. Because the main concern seems to be that student and professor/TA relationships pose a thread to academic professionalism in conditions where they compromise the faculty members' judgement of students. The policy for TAs is even stricter. Personal relationships, whether intimate or not are unokay. They can't meet with you outside of class/office hours until they've returned your final graded piece of work.
Friend of mine apparently knew a couple of girls who, on separate occasions, had been allowed exempt from exams all semester because the respective professors found them attractive. No personal relationship going on, but the unfair privileges due to professor's personal fondness for the girls.....

@LimusocoBobo: Wait, so... Basil came after the relationship? Then that doesn't apply here! >:O You two just happen to be posting on the same site. And you just happen to be a mod on the site. ..... Plus, should she post inappropriately, if you don't warn her, then one of the other mods will.

@sparkshooter yes it's possible. I've been dating a Basiler for 11 years now. And we'll get married later this year.
@zoneflare4 @Christalinne yeah... I was watching PLL. ._. (being forced to by my S.O.) But, the Aria thing just weirds me out every time I watch. But my S.O. doesn't seem phased.
Look at the Japaneses. They are a very open minded culture with barely any devoted religious people as new generation comes by but too bad since birth rate is very low compared to other society.
In America, no it's not right.
Um. Japanese people are not open minded. Stuff like anime and manga make them seem open-minded, you know, when the anime industry is making things like a DMMD anime and Free! with all that homosexual subtext (I s2g), or all those harem anime, or GL fanservice anime... Not to mention all the ... and yuri manga. So they must be cool with this whole gay thing, right? Unlike in North America, where the whole gay marriage thing is a big issue right now (well, unless you're in Canada like me). Guess what? Yes, it's not an issue in Japan, but it's because they don't even talk about it. They don't even have civil unions. They don't even have a clue what they're talking about, in Japan, saying you're gay is synonymous to saying that you're a transvestite. Because everyone thinks that gay people act like women, so it's only natural they also dress like women too, but they're still men, and it's a bit weird. But it's funny, right cause there are TV celebrities like that and they're really funny, so it's totally ok to take it all as a big joke hahaha. No.
Well that's just one thing though, see how accepting they are of foreigners? They always portray those blond characters positively, like all those cool bishonen boys or super kawaii girls who come from America, France, or England, or whatever and always grab the protag's heart. Guess what? There are tons of biases and stereotypes against people who come from outside Japan. Do you know how racist some people are? Here, read this article about racist soccer fans. My 2nd-generation Japanese friend went to Japan for university, and her peers discriminated against her because she didn't grow up there. My grandmother once said in conversation, "I don't wanna be racist, but I didn't want Jun (my mother) to marry a black guy." Her and my grandfather were appalled when my mother told them she was going to marry a white man. They're both atheist, this has nothing to do with some religious thing.
It seems like people are basing how Japanese people are off anime and manga, please don't, it's not accurate at all.

OT: I don't know, I came here to see what the answer was because I'm curious too.

On Basilmarket, can a user and a moderator date each other? Is there anything wrong with Basilers dating sheriffs?

It would create a Conflict of Interest, and may get the Professor fired. However, it is okay if you aren't being taught by them.

Had a talk with a professor about this last week in context of the topic of professionalism and whether teacher candidates can/should date faculty associates or school associates (basically, the teachers supervising them). My professor's answer to the question was basically that they're not allowed to date ANY student currently attending the University, regardless of if they are in their class(es) or not, so I don't know about other places, but at UBC, it is apparently written in their code of conduct that they're not allowed to.

I think it depends on the school. It could affect the professor's job (either removal or just bias against him/her when raises come around), but as long as both people are within legal age there shouldn't be a problem outside the school. My local University does not have a rule against this but they still advise not to. They'd just get somebody else to review your work.

Superior/subordinate relationships are usually frowned upon. Are you asking this in terms of a personal inquiry, or are you looking for a philosophical opinion?

I'm pretty sure there are rules that forbid a prof from dating a student currently in his class.

That said, my linear algebra prof is really hot. I'm gonna invite her to the frat castle towards the end of the semester. Oh and go to office hours like all the time.

As long as the professor isn't instructing one of the student's classes during the time they're in a relationship, technically it should be fine. But from a social stand point, factors just as age play a role. I.e a 20 year old dating a 60 year old is pretty weird imo, now i know there's young professors which is what you're probably referring too.
