Colossus at Six Flags catches fire

So did anyone hear about this today? http://ktla.com/2014/09/08/firefighters-respond-to-report-of-fire-at-magic-mountains-colossus-roller-coaster/

It has a bunch of people paranoid about roller coasters, saying "see this is why I never get on those things" but the ride has been closed for a few weeks now so people weren't riding it when it happened (the park itself was actually closed too, they're only open on saturday/sunday during the off season). From the sounds of it, it caught fire due to whatever construction they were doing to it (going to turn it into a wooden hybrid with inversions and high banked curves). They were using metal cutting tools, so a spark likely set the wood ablaze. Pretty crazy still to see a coaster on fire.

Although they just seem to be having bad luck lately with accidents. A tree fell on the Ninja back in July http://ktla.com/2014/07/07/4-injured-on-ninja-roller-coaster-at-magic-mountain-fire-department/

And in case anyone that hasn't been there is curious, here's videos of the 2 rides in action

Twisted Colossus (what they were in the process of starting when it caught fire)

@ox0Shad0w0xo: the lines at magic mountain are really deceptive lol. physically, the lines aren't that long. idk why, but they move ridiculously slow. soooooo slow. and people would just go in and out of the line to get food or something. in great adventure, the past few times i went was packed, and the lines for nitro+el toro stretched towards the entrance. the line moves really fast though, about an 1:15 wait from the entrance.

@simaini: Yeah, that one really puts a beating on you lol. All this talk is making me want to go now though.

@ox0Shad0w0xo: yeah the green lantern was what i was talking about lol. if a rollercoaster guy who records a whole bunch of rides says a ride is painful af, you know it's gonna be painful af lol </3 and nty to standing coasters lol. rode the one at great adventure 2x, never again >.<

@simaini: Yeah riddler is the standing coaster in Magic Mountain and Green Lantern is this one. Even the guy recording it sounds like he's in pain lol.

@ox0Shad0w0xo: oh, now i'm lost lol. the ride i was talking about, the one where i heard was really painful, was the 4d one... not sure if that's green lantern or riddler lol. but if riddler is a standing coaster, i wouldn't want to go on that either. at GA, the green lantern is a standing coaster and it hurts my legs like craaaaaazy. the blood rushes to my calves and it feels like my veins are going to explode.

@simaini: Yeah X2 is definitely the best there.

Riddler isn't too bad if you don't try to be "smart" and attempt to sit down, because then it locks in place and you're stuck in basically an invisible chair type of burn on your legs, combined with the G forces of the ride itself. But it's a lot less painful than Green Lantern.

@ox0Shad0w0xo: well, i don't really know what's considered long at magic mountain, but goliath was 2hr wait >.< at the entrance, it says how long you'll have to wait, but i thought that meant from the beginning of the line. the line wasn't all the way at the entrance, so i thought the line would just be 45 minutes >.< learned better the next time. there was no line for viper, which is why i went on it lol. it was super uncomfortable for my shoulders, but my head didn't get banged around. i was thinking of going on the wooden coaster, i think apocalypse?, but on the map it was like it's a medium lv intensity so i thought it was like a kiddy coaster or something lol. i go to SFGreat adventure all the time, which is why i found goliath to be really boring. i compared it to nitro and it seems way slower, and there were no hills at the end i was thinking of going on tatsu too, but the line was super long and it's just a flying coaster. i went on superman at GA and it's a flying coaster too, so i didn't think it would be anything special. X2 was definitely the best coaster though imo. i didn't go on riddler because i heard it was ridiculously painful
SFGA is only open til october so i can't go in thanksgiving lol. and i'm not gonna ride a plane just to go to MM

@simaini Lines must have been long if you only got on those. I'd say X2, Tastu, and Scream are musts when you go to magic mountain. And the remake Psyclone (terminator, renamed apocalypse) is actually better than it looks and is worth a try as well. There are no brakes through the whole ride, so it speeds through the whole track pretty aggressively. Beyond those, Goliath is great if you like straight drops (which you did not it seems), and Riddler is still a good coaster with 6 inversions. And it's the second to last stand up coaster built (not counting the 2 that were relocated) and 1 of the 12 in the world that are still operating. Worth a ride just for that imo.

Oh and, yeah I avoid viper. My friend used to say riding Viper first was a tradition and ensured you'd have a good day at the park, but it always gave me a headache from my head banging against those super hard shoulder restraints.

And I may regret saying this online, but try going to six flags the day after thanksgiving on black friday. Thanksgiving week is the only week between September and December, where the park is open for a full 7 days straight. So because it's mostly open Saturday and Sunday only during the off season, and people are busy with black friday sales, the park is a ghost town. The last time my family did this (we went for 7-8 years in a row and it was always empty), we asked the park staff how many people were in the park and they said it's less than 10,000 people. Needless to say, most lines were no longer than 5 minute wait times. I'm hoping more people haven't caught on to this since last time

@fun2killu: Really? It's been ages since I rode ghost rider, but I remember it being relatively smooth for a woodie. Maybe it's because it was new when I rode it (Yeah I don't go to knotts much at all.

@ox0Shad0w0xo: yeah, it would just give me a headache. Same with the one @ knotts

@Tranquil Wait what? Never heard of a bird flying that close to a coaster before.

@halfway They aren't that bad once you start riding a lot of them. You start to build up a tolerance for the G's. When I used to go to six flags 2-3 times a year, I barely felt anything on drops smaller than 100 feet. Then I stopped going for maybe 8-9 years, and even the small coasters had me going "woah I really felt that drop"

@coast Haha, at least you had something to keep you occupied in line.

@fun2killu They feel too rickety for you? I know I used to hate the old Psyclone at magic mountain for that reason.
lol i saw this on ktla too.

i went to six flags a few months ago. there was a girl whose ass hung out her denim shorts. i was a few groups behind her and kept staring. the view was nice, but ladies pls. y'all make me feel so guilty.
i went to six flags great adventure like 10x this year and majority of the girls wear denim shorts, and quite a lot of them have half of their asses out. i went to magic mountain this summer and similar situation there too <3
i only went on goliath (disappointing), viper (ouch), super man escape from krypton (lame), lex luthor drop of doom (meh) and X2. X2 was awesome. i never rode on a 4d (or 5?) coaster before and it was so fun.
