Does maplestory really only take up 7gb of space?

If I remember correctly it took up 12GB on my bro's comp a year ago, and now I can't install it on this device... , even after finishing the download (7GB). I can't install it because it says an error occurred during the installation and then Error -40 pops up. I looked at my tablet's space and it was around 10mb or 0 space left..

@PerfectSight Tablets can be a little weird with their memory allocation, since they usually have to deal with limited storage space. My Kindle Fire is always gaining and losing space for no particular reason that I can tell, and I have to run an app I downloaded to keep the RAM and storage cleaned up so it doesn't keep running out of space.

I was going to suggest you try downloading the installation files onto a USB flash drive to save the 7GB of space they take up, but it's unclear from what I can find if your tablet has a normal USB port on it, or if that's a feature on the removable keyboard. If you CAN use a USB flash drive with it, you could download the installation files to the flash drive, then install the game onto the flash drive, which would keep the 7GB of game files off your tablet's storage, and you could run the game from the USB drive (assuming Maplestory will run on the tablet at all).
You'd need at least a 16GB flash drive for that.

ok thanks for the detailed and comprehensible answer BobR I don't know if I can quote you, but I'm currently having exactly 30GB of free space to try Ms. I hard reset my tablet to do so. The thing I don't understand is how I even used up 10GB of free space. My apps and files take up only 500mb and I even emptied my recycle bin, yet I only had a few KB of free space. When I restarted, I got an additional GB of free space lol.

@PerfectSight OK, this is how installing Maplestory works.

The installation files you download from the Maple site take up 7.09GB. (I just did this myself so I can check it exactly.)
There are FIVE files, named "MSSetupv163.exe", "MSSetupv163.z01", "MSSetupv163.z02", "MSSetupv163.z03" and "MSSetupv163.z04" for a total of 7.09GB.

When you double-click on "MSSetupv163.exe" to start the installation the first thing it does is create a Windows Temporary folder on the installation drive and unpacks a file called "MSSetupv163.msi" from the 5 files you just downloaded into the temporary folder. This "MSSetupv163.msi" file is approximately the same size as the 5 original files, in other words, about 7GB.

This means you now have approximately 14GB of Maplestory files on your hard drive, the original 5 installation files and the unpacked .msi file.

Then the installation process unpacks the "MSSetupv163.msi" file into a SECOND temporary Windows folder, creating all the individual game files (the ones you normally see in your Maplestory folder).
This takes up ANOTHER 7GB on the hard drive, for a running total of 21GB (so far).

Finally it creates the Nexon folder on the C: drive and the Maplestory folder inside the Nexon folder, and then copies all the Maplestory files from the temporary folder into the Maplestory folder.
This uses ANOTHER 7GB for the final files in their final location.
This is a total of 28GB taken up by Maplestory files on your hard drive now.

IF - the installation process completes successfully, the installer will now DELETE the two temporary folders, freeing up approximately 14GB of temporary space.
If the Installation fails, it may end up leaving these files on the drive, which is why your brother's Maplestory folder was so big. Failed installations and patches make a total mess of your hard drive and leave huge files all over, taking up tons of wasted space.

Lastly, you have to MANUALLY delete the original downloaded files (the "MSSetupv163.exe" and ".z0x" files) to recover the 7GB that they're taking up, since they're not needed after the game is successfully installed. (This is another reason why your brother's Maplestory folder may have been twice as big as it should have been. Hardly anyone knows to go back and delete the installation files.)

This will leave you with a Maplestory folder containing the actual game, which is 7.72GB.

The point is, while the game itself "only" takes up 7.72GB, it takes a total of 28GB to install it.
Plus, if your hard drive is almost completely full, Windows will get cranky and run VERY slow, and probably crash.
You should have somewhere in the neighborhood of 30GB free before you even think about installing Maplestory.

Plus, it's unclear whether Maplestory will actually run on the Atom CPU in the Asus t100.

yes, it is between 7-8gb at the moment, but you need about 14gb total to install.

@PerfectSight if you have another computer, you could install and update it on that, and copy the maplestory files over to your tablet through a usb drive or similar. Then just run the gamelauncher and you can play
@PerfectSight: Well if you get it through something like steam its a little different and it may not use as much space. Basically the installer extracts files out of the installer, so you have a copy inside the installer and the actual game files that you'll use later, which is why you need way more space than the game takes up (to install it).
are there any ways for me to do that kind of thing? it's still fine if I don't manage to install it, I just want to play Omok and meet my old active friends at least one more time.
if your maple folder is over 7-8gb's, then its likely you have unnecessary files in your maple folder from past patches that may have failed or misc. other things. You also need a pretty good amount of space if you use the installer, since you must accomodate the space of the installer + the maple files and that can easily be 10gb+
G what do you mean by ''if you use the installer'''? aren't we supposed to install it in order to play the game. Like It took me 2 hours to finish the first download (7GB) and the second one is the installation, which takes like maybe 10 minutes and is almost as big?

this is why i download my maplestory on a flash drive. Don't want it to take up valuable space

7.48gb is the size of it.. about 5gb for the installation files

EDIT: if your on a tablet try to get a large microsd card for additional space
When it is installing your computer holds that space. If you delete more files to make space and still didnt have enough it will still occupy it. my device is specifically an Asus t100 tablet (a small tablet with a small keyboard) and the installation stops exactly when I have close to no space. I tried restarting my tablet and it somehow got an additional GB of free space, so the installation bar was more full, but it still didn't work with 2GB of total empty space.
