Are they going to come after me?
questions answered. If the lock feature was still allowed I'd lock this down.
Thanks, all!
Anyway, this is something I've always been afraid of since 6th Grade when my friends told me that there are certain items people glitch to steal your account when you pick them up... is that just a stupid rumor/urban legend? Like are there actually items that can get you into trouble when you pick them up? (For the 9 years I've played the game I have ALWAYS dropped items when I randomly find them)
Because the game runs in a "client/server" environment, individual players can NOT "glitch" anything in the game to make them affect other players, in any way.
This means players NEVER connect directly to each other, they can ONLY connect to the Nexon game servers, which stand between the players as a barrier.
Each player runs a "client" program on their own computers, and yes, those programs are vulnerable to being manipulated by cheaters, but the things that can be done with the local client program will only affect that client. There's no way to make a "hack" to one client program affect another player's client program because of the Game Servers between them.
A classic example of that is the legendary "trade hack" that supposedly takes control of another player's computer and forces it to complete a trade for 1 meso and sell all your good stuff to a hacker (or whatever). Urban myth, plain and simple. One client can NOT affect another client in that way. The hacker would have to gain direct access to your computer and modify YOUR client program to make anything like that work. Again, the game servers stand between the players' client programs and block that kind of thing.
That also applies to "glitched items" that can "hack you". Again, pure urban myth. When you pick up an item, the only attributes that item can possibly possess are the ones the game servers allow.
Unless the "hackers" have also hacked the Nexon game servers, only the normal attributes will be transferred to your client and inventory from a item you pick up.
Occasionally there ARE errors in the game (glitches) that cheaters may try to exploit to affect other players.
This includes things like the MTS problem of a few years back where a Nexon programming screwup would reveal your account (login) ID to anyone who bought an item from you through the MTS, and a notorious bug in the game code that allows cheaters to crash everyone's client on a map ("map crash hack" ).
But it's impossible to make changes to items that would be transferred to another player which will affect them in any way.
Closest thing I can think of for anyone getting in trouble for looting was when the mass meso dupe and item dupe was happening and plenty of people got hellbanned.

They can't steal your account from an item you picked up.
I just wanted to know what you picked up that would warrant such a reaction from them.
well that's something I've been paranoid about for no reason for almost ten years... LOL
I didn't actually pick anything up, it was them who picked it up from me.

I know it's against the rules to "discuss illegal activities" but that is the discussion of actively using/promoting them, right? ...like am I allowed to ask questions about staying safe in the game from malicious programs? Just shut the thread down if not, mods.

Depends on what you picked up.
I phrased the thread in a humorous/silly way but I was actually curious/stressed @ whether or not I'm in danger.
rip in pce uglierbetty
no, it's not possible to get ur info with just ur ign, so u good
Well is it possible for them to steal my password/info just knowing my IGN?
that's my question
Wat? I feel like this made me lose a few brain cells. I feel stupider now
