General

let me get this straight about reboot

A few questions;
(1) So the only way to upgrade equips is by enhancing it with mesos? (i'm referring to stopping that star in the middle of the bar)
(2) How many enhancements should I do in order to get acceptable stats? When is it considered too risky or not worth it to enhance?

Sorry for the nub questions, I'm new to reboot and everything I've read seems to good to be true so I just wanted to ask questions

@cantstopme: I'll play whatever I feel like playing, pleb, thanks. I don't spend my money on NX so Reboot is the only place where I won't be heavily "out-statted" by people who just spend money for all their stats.

Seconding what natty2 said. While enhancements are important and you should max them as much as you can, I would also focus on potentials - those will be what are most important later on. But I wouldn't look to those until around the mid-game (so approximately level 140 - 150 gear), upon which you can transfer that potential - provided it is Epic or below - to the higher level gear 10 levels above. So this is generally done with equipment like Pensalir, onto things like CRA, SW equipment, etc. (Side-note: This is different from transposing gear.) Then, after cubing some more to better potentials, those will have to serve well for you until Arcane gear becomes accessible to you (which will be far away anyways).

Equip may be upgraded in the form of star force (what you refer to as "enhancing it with mesos" )
And with potential (in the past - known as Miracle Cube). Available in the cash shop - also with mesos.
And last but not least, Nebulites which you should only resort to if it's your endgame gear.

There's also transposing, but it's probably a bit advanced (and meant for equips at level 140/150)

There's no point to stop star-forcing.
There are equips known as "Tyrant" equips (Shoe/Cape/Belt / rare ocasions: Glove) that you may star-force, but it may blow-up from the get-go.

Otherwise, any equip, you should max it's star force, since you should always be able to get a duplicare in case it blows-up (an exception may be a badge, then you should go 14 or something).
You obviously want as much as you can, so on equips like CRA gear, gollux, etc. you would want 15 stars. No less.
