Question about my Sat score

Ok so I got my score today from the test I took last month. The scores were apparently available last week but I didn't know lol

I got a 1740. How good is that?
I'm not looking for ivy league or anything related to engineering lol. In fact i'm probably gonna have an art major lol (most likely film). I got a 590 in Math and Writing (8 on the essay) and a 570 in Reading.
I didn't study for the test at all besides doing a few practice questions the night before. I was aiming for an 1800 but i'm pretty content with that I got. Should I take the next test this month and try to get a higher score?

Please spare me your "i gotz 2400 hahaha u dumb nub" crap please.

Affirmative action is the dumbest thing about school applications ever lol.

@P3pp3rF1sh: Well sometimes its not all about the grades. Maybe the black person had alot of EC's or something. But than it could just be their skin color.
Honestly, I think affirmative action is a little unfair if it's denying an education to other people because they are NOT black. If they want to give us some reparation, make it a reparation that doesn't hurt other people.

@Spiritual2: Yup I agree.

@DragonBandit: That's likely but I want to go to school to learn about things I care about. I guess i'll just have to get lucky and be one of the few art majors that make money.

@weredoggy: That's average? o_O If it's in the 70th percentile wouldn't it be above average? 50th would be average.

@MistFTW: Well my GPA is like a 3.0.... lol but i do alot of extra curriculars and have alot of community service hours

@ExoBishops: what do you mean for a black person lol
It's not put I just wanted to point that out as there have been some other admission + rejections due to affirmative. and of course I'm happy that she got in but all the while, in a situation with winners, there's always losers to put in a different perspective.

It mostly depends on where you apply. You have any ideas yet?
Since you want to major in something non-STEM, they'll probably look more at your grades than anything. Or your portfolio if you're required to send one in.

I ended up with a 1900 and that puts me in the lowest 25% of scores at the university I now attend... PFFFFFT.

Also, you're black. So you're pretty much set for the rest of your academic career by that fact alone.

Congratulations! That is a very good score! [: But of course if you want and have the time, resources, and opportunity, why not work harder and retake it? I bet you can even get 2000+ if you studied even more! But honestly, you should be fine [: SAT scores aren't a GIGANTIC factor in decision processes i believe.. like some of my friends in college have Scores ranging from 1600-1700s and 2300-2400s. all going to the same college So don't worry too much, don't stress out, just know you did your best :] Best of luck!
I don't see how people say they studied for these tests, the questions are completely random and just cover skills you should of learned from all your classes in high school.
the SAT has a style of questions that can be improved upon with practice. doing stuff like practice questions can help raise your score.

@acuppa: Oh wow I never knew that. No writing? woow
What was the maximum score for the old test?
And yeah. Plus i'm broke. I couldn't afford an ivy anyway. My parents make less than 40k a year combined lol
1600 was the old maximum score, before the writing portion was added.

but seriously, you're fine. since you're a senior now, isn't it a bit late to re-take it considering most apps are due, like, today?

@3moRaccoon: I don't know where you go to school but are you a junior or senior? If you're a junior then just do whatever you can to boost your GPA as much as you can, but that goes without saying, right? ECs help quite a bit, but I think colleges look more at GPA. I remember having nothing but 125 volunteer hours because my school requires that of us in order to graduate, and almost no other ECs, and I still got in. But bottom line, GPA is definitely the most important one of them all.

And ahh, I understand. Well that's great ;D

@peterisnoob: Source? Seriously.

@Llamaemon: Is this affirmative action thing really like that? lol
Yes I just remembered a few weeks ago when Harvard early admissions came out, my friend who is dark put she was black on the application and she got in while two of my friends that are Asian got deferred when they had higher grades than her so.

I got pretty much the same score as you did, and I got into one of the schools I applied for, so I'm not depressed or anything. What's more important in my opinion is the fact that you can show that you work hard. I had a 4.3 GPA and I got into everything I applied for except for three of them. And since the major you're going to apply for isn't that competitive to begin with, you certainly have a decent chance with that score.

If you're doing an art major SAT scores won't matter much.
1740 should be fine in that case.

with a 1740, that's average. But your grades in school are going to matter more.
I had a 2300 SAT score but a horrible work ethic which showed itself as a 3.4 GPA.
Got deferred and rejected by a lot of places.

I would just like to point out with the art major degree you will most likely be making less than 40k a year. Working at mcdonalds btw.
i think affirmative actions should be based on socioeconomic factors not on colors... I just wanted to say this because of the fact that you will be going to good colleges simply based on your colors
Well schools want diversity and they use affirmative action to provide that - not that private colleges have to have affirmative action. But I do agree with you.
And on topic, not that I'm totally being a pessimist or anything, I would double major in something other than liberal arts (econ?) - the job market isn't too yielding to art majors.

Since you want to major in art, i would assume your sat scores don't matter as much.

i think for a lot of schools, if you make sub 60k combined, you get tuition free

@3moRaccoon: If that was your first time taking it, ya take it again.

I was like you: I didn't study the first time and got like an 1910. My score improved by 300+ just by studying.

Big 10 schools are the schools that make up the Big 10 conference in college sports. Michigan State, Penn State, Northwestern, Michigan, Ohio State, Minnesota, Perdue, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska -- all respectable schools. But if you want to go in-state, I'm sure there are a lot of options.

@RitoPls: yeah i fixed it. i realized my mistake LOL

Excuse my ignorance but, what are big 10 schools?
But yeah i'm black so yay?

And should I retake it and try to get a higher score?
In fact, the people at my high school got >1000 LOL.
Do... you mean <1000? As in, less than 1000?

OT: Ya SAT's are nbd. I got a 2230 and got into everywhere to which I applied except Stanford. Curse my white skin.

A lot of schools are great at 1740 level. If you're black, you can go to any Big 10 school including Michigan.
It really depends on your HS location and the avg SAT scores for your hs. If you go to a ghetto-az hs where the avg is like 1300 then 1740 is pretty good. Not Ivy good but it will probably get u into one of the UCs or SUNYs. My SAT was like 2170 but I went to private hs so everyone else was like 2300+.
I live in DC. The average score I think is in the 1200's or 1300's. We're stupid AF lol. In fact, the people at my high school got <1000 LOL.

EDIT: I was in the 70th percentile for all subjects in my state and in the 80th percentile for writing in the national.

Edit: Don't worry about IVY when you're an undergrad. My supervisor went to UC Riverside (LOL) as an undergrad and Columbia for grad school and she turned out just fine. Don't worry too much.
That's perfectly fine for a lot of schools. I got a similar score (1200 on the old test), went to the university I wanted to go to, and got my degree. People make way too big a deal of the SATs. You don't need to go to a freakin' Ivy League for your undergrad.
