Does being drunk affect your judgement?

Howdy all!

I'm drunk right now.
But, I have no issues driving, interacting with people, or have any issues functioning while doing my job.
My question to you all is, does alcohol affect your actions? You always hear about it in those rape cases on the news and articles and such. But does it affect how view things in general? I've always believed that if you thought about it before and you did it drunk, it's still your fault.

Me and the lady, always get into arguments about this, because she does some crazy stuff when shes drunk. I feel that it's not justified, you thought about before you let loose. And it's still your fault after the fact. Can't blame a liquid for you actions; ya?

What do you guys think?

@upcomingnerd: It does affect me but I said to the point of it making me do something I wouldn't do when I'm sober.
I'm generally a very conscious person of everything around me, the best way to describe it is that I can kinda step out of my body and see things from a top perspective, including my own actions and thoughts, which really makes me have full control over my emotions. It sounds weird af but thats the best way I can describe it.
@fradddd: to be fair I have yet to drink to a blackout point though, so it could be that
but I have been pretty hammered on numerous occasions
while I'm drinking though I'm still conscious enough to constantly drink water and eat food or something to prevent a hangover, it basically looms in my mind on automatic mode

@upcomingnerd yeah then it doesn't make sense. Drunk = impairment pretty much so if there is no impairment, that's not drunkenness.

I have complete control over my emotions at any given time, so being drunk doesnt do anything to impair me to the point of doing stuff I wouldnt do sober. some are more susceptible than others tho genetically and I feel that people who do stupid chit when drunk could be excused for non legal troubles, but legally its still their precaution before they get drunk to not fall in to trouble

"I'm drunk right now"
What did I just read? Are you still in high school and feel like a badass for drinking? You're probably buzzed after one beer. Being actually drunk will affect your judgement, impair you, and you should not drive if you are actually drunk.

You sound like you need to get more drunk.
I wouldn't say I'm a lightweight, because, well, I am not light.

I'm a lot more touchy and open to saying stuff when I'm drunk.
I also laugh a LOT, and stumble a lot.
This is after about 12 drinks

Usually I have some focus of myself, but I know not to go outside whatsoever. The only thing I'm aware of is my harsher commentary towards things. Despite that I still manage to keep my usage of profanity to a bare minimum! "You bunghole cheater!" And that's usually directed towards the game or something. Usually Mario Party.

Regardless of being drunk or not you're responsible for what you do or did at that given time.

You are right to suspect blaming liquid. Im drunk as well and my attitude towards risk taking is altered, but id never say my actions aren't my own. If someone would make a claim that alcohol forces them do the foolish stuff then they need a break and probably to avoid any strong substances.

Alcohol definitely effects your judgement. I've been drinking for 16 years, it's only this year I've decided to give it up. It's fun in moderation but has some dire consequences if abused.

Yeah, while drinking sets you out to speak freely and act freely, if you consume too much you really have no clue what the hell you're doing. People say it releases your inner desires, yeah maybe when drinking to buzzed but tanked, hell nah. What you do at that point is up to a chance in the wind.

@readers: No sweat, it happens.

And yeah, I agree with you on addictions.

@angelkinda: I don't know why I got that conclusion from your post earlier when you were talking about responsibility (and not consent). It must have been too early in the morning.

In that case, agreed, although addictions happen for a reason and people who cannot control their drinking should be rehabilitated before the consequences occur.

@readers: No, that's not what I'm trying to say. I'm saying that if being drunk induces a behaviour in someone that is undesirable, this can be avoided by not being drunk. And if said individual chooses to indulge in being drunk, whilst knowing based on retrospect that the undesirable behaviour will be yielded, then they are responsible for carrying out that behaviour (while drunk, even though their judgement is impaired).

@angelkinda: Yes, because a girl is just "asking for it" when a guy proceeds to rape her. After all, she's responsible for her own actions! She's 'choosing' for this to happen! I bet this defense will hold up very well in a courtroom, as it supposedly has, very many times in the past (/s).

To the OP: there are many studies and research papers that have been conducted that show the effects of alcohol. You can Google them, but otherwise here's a good summary and rundown. http://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/Hangovers/beyondHangovers.htm
tl;dr: Yes, it affects your actions & judgment.

Some more severe examples of the effects of alcohol: Heavy drinking can impair memory permanently (Korsakoff's syndrome). Exposure to alcohol as a teenager can impair your brain development as an adult, generally speaking (although this depends on how much exposure).

I don't have any problems with being drunk, but it still affects judgement. Some people just can't control themselves, dood.

I personally don't drink much alcohol, but I do believe that one is still responsible for their actions. No disrespect or anything, but if your girl knows that she does these crazy things while she is drunk, and still gets drunk anyway, wouldn't she be directly responsible for allowing those stuff happen in the first place? Because she is essentially choosing for it to happen.

Another way to look at it - if we can convict people on the premise that they're agents of their actions, despite being drunk; would it not apply to every single individual that is drunk?
