Other than the injections, it shouldn't be. My dentist prescribed Amoxicylin after the procedure so if the post-operation side effects concern you, ask what medications can be taken. Most of the time, they'll prescribe you something themselves.
I've never had one done personally but I have assisted my dentist in quite a few root canal procedures.

From what I saw, the anaesthesia hurts the most because it has to be injected. Everybody is different so I've seen my dentist use anywhere from one to three vials of Novocaine, and iirc 4 is only used in extreme conditions and 5 is not allowed depending on state. The majority of patients flinched when injected, and I remember one middle-aged woman screaming. The next thing a patient will hate will be the solution that's designed to chemically kill the bacteria. From what the patients have said, it tastes bitter. A good dental assistant should suction all of this away but once in a while, they will miss a few droplets. I have too lol

Also, the needle thing the other posters mentioned is a measuring tool for the nerve in your teeth in case you don't understand.

tldr: I worked as a dental assistant before and saw several being done. lol sucks2beyou. I was so glad I was on the dentist side and not the patient side. o.o

these guys are just looking it up and saying it doesnt hurt, even my dentist says it hurts bad.
I've had it done myself...twice! I guess it depends on how severe a person's tooth is decaying. I told my dentists before both procedures that I had really low tolerance to pain, so they gave me extra large doses of local anesthesia. Plus, in the first procedure, after I was injected once, the assistant came back after ten minutes and checked to make sure I was really numb by poking at my gums, and when I told her I felt pain, she numbed me even more. You just have to speak up if you feel pain and the dentist will adjust accordingly.

They're going to get worse to the point that you feel like you're getting punched by Mike Tyson repeatedly.
Isnt that a filling?
Part of the root canal treatment is when they put the filling in. Here's a website telling you about the entire process
Better. When I had mine done, they injected me with local anesthesia at least 3 times to make my gums super numb. Then they drilled a hole at the top of my tooth and scraped all the nerves out. You'll feel that part but it won't hurt; it'll just be uncomfortable. They'll put some sort of post inside your tooth to strengthen it. Afterwards, they seal the top, and it'll look tooth-colored so you'll barely notice it unless you look closely. My first dentist didn't do a good job, so I had to redo it a 2nd time. But I had no problems at all. No pain after I had it done.
What she said. Make sure they numb you enough so that you don't feel the pain. Even if they say "you'll be fine", make sure they numb you. It's way better to not feel your jaw the rest of the day than to have a drill rip out the nerves in your teeth.

I've had two root canals after I chipped my front teeth so here's my experience (it was during elementary school so my memory is a bit fuzzy):

First off, the injection to numb your teeth will definitely hurt; there's no question about that. After that, it gets unpleasant at worst because that region of your mouth is numb, so you can't feel your dentist sticking things (I think they looked like thumbtacks) in your teeth to measure tooth depth or drilling the hole. However, it hurts a little bit when the dentist sticks stuff in to remove bacteria and the pulp. After that, it's smooth sailing when it comes to filling in the hole except mine messed up with how much filling to put in, so she had to melt it. Your lip will feel swollen for about an hour though afterwards.

Not really.. I had one when I was in 8th grade, you feel a slight pain, like a pinch. That's all.
