To those living in college dorms.

How often do your things "disappear"? I toured in a couple of Universities and realized how easy to steal your suitemate's things. I'll be living in a dorm this fall and I want to know how often do thefts occur. Thanks!

This is why you poke holes in the condoms.
usually your suitemates wont be stealing your stuff. it just doesnt seem logical since they know you're gonna be seeing each other all the time.
what's he gonna do, steal your laptop and then use it in front of you?

you should be worrying about thefts at the library.
That makes sense. I'm less worried now

The thing is, your roommates rarely steal valuable things, but they'll take smaller items such as:

-printer paper because they ran out
-some change because they don't have exact
-qtips to clean ears
-lighter to smoke
-condoms because your roommate(s) ran out
-food because your roommate bought the minifridge
-drinks because your roommate bought the minifridge
-your detergent because they ran out
-your shampoo/body wash because they ran out

though they generally ask first.

From what I've heard, theft is more likely to occur due to people going into your dorm/apartment if you leave your door open or forget to lock it. I haven't heard many stories of room mates stealing, though you could easily be stuck with some pretty terrible ones who constantly do drugs or party daily.

tbh, it really depends on where u r going.

I've never lost anything and i keep everything in the open. the only thing i lost was a little cotainer of hot sauce. roomate thought it was trash and tossed it (i was mad. i can only find it in the asian market near my parents house).

In my dorm, everyone usually kept the doors unlocked, even went to classes with doors propped open, left laptops in the lounge, even left game consoles by the TV. No reports of theft, since we were lucky enough to be living with people who aren't jerks and steal from others living with them.

Nothing, and my room was directly connected to the bathroom. Didn't learn that I could block entry from my side of the suite until the end of the year, too.
Other people have had stuff stolen though, because the entry door do not automatically lock itself. The room doors did.

Keep your valuables on your person at all times.
Turn them into jewelry if you have to.

This. It's the only way even though it costs A LOT.

Or maybe a locker would be cheaper, or a chest.

Roomy lost one of his shoes. He found it the next day tied to the piping on the ceiling 3 floors up.
