I think the better explanation is that they want people to bandwagon to Phantom to buy more NX.

Only a matter of time before they (Phantoms) get nerfed too. DS will always be useful as long as they don't nerf the bind effect from binding darkness (and that they don't put it on the same timer as Magic Crash).

Do not worry though the mercs 1 vs 1 dpm BARELY gets touched. The only skill that gets nerfed that effects their 1 vs 1 dpm is afa. The nerf for that skill isn't that bad at all so don't worry. They where not really a mobbing class anyways but all their mob skills get nerfed.
I'm also curious of when Dark Metamorph will be fixed. I really hope before the Demon Slayer nerf >_>
They'll all get nerfed this summer.
