Has the Community Changed for the Worse?

General MapleStory Forum Talk about MapleStory in general

Why, hello there!

My name is Mae and I have played MapleStory since 2007. It has had a huge impact on my childhood. I started in Scania, played a little in bellocan, and ended up in Bera. Up until late 2013 I was extremely active, I then decided to take a break and returned in January 2015. Lets keep this short and sweet as I encourage discussion.

I feel like the community has changed for the worse since my departure.

~ Up until 2014, people were 100% against cheating. People despised botters who stole spots on the rankings from people who worked hard. People valued legitimacy. However, in 2015 a majority of people 220+ macro and cheat in order to level. I hate to admit it but all my friends do this. I don't understand why people do this. When did this become okay? Why is this okay? Why doesn't anyone care anymore?

~ Up until late 2013, less people spent money in order to achiever new records in game. Pay 2 Win (P2W) has always been a controversial topic in MapleStory. You can find archived threads dating back to 2010 debating the P2W aspect of MapleStory. My point is, people have always had the option to purchase cap damage. However, more people are doing this today then ever before. This is not necessarily bad, however I find this interesting and I would like to know why this has happened.

~ Up until late 2013, we had popular/famous people in the community who were respected for their hard work and achievements within the game. We no longer have people who are looked up to by all Maplers. Instead, we have extermely funded people who spent thousands of dollars. When a new mapler looks at them they don't think, "wow I hope to be like them one day" but rather, "how much money do I need to spend until I hit that damamge?".

~ Up until 2013, people enjoyed the presence of one and another. Today, people prefer to stay with there guilds and small groups of friends. People don't enjoy making new friends anymore. There is beef between so many people, guilds and alliances. Furthermore, is it just me or do people publicise personal drama and rumours about people. The talk of this community resembles that of which would be heard in a senior girls change room.

~ Up until 2013, people did not take advantage of dupers and exploiters to the degree that they do today. Back then an exploiter would dupe and slowly sell his items one by one. Today they exploit and tons of people go to them in order to buy stacks of nebs, accounts with thousands of red cubes and scrolls, and NX.

This is my opinion of the current community of the game. Do you agree or disagree? I really miss the 2012/2013 era. Maybe one day those famous Maplers that we all looked up to will return in order to save us from this toxicity

I think you're confusing the pre-bb era with 2011-2013, because I **know for a fact** that duping began just before big bang, and people have been buying from hackers ever since then.

However, I know where you're coming from--as a pre-bb mapler, the feel of the game was simply different back then--due to various factors, despite what people say today. It's a shame, but the game has simply fallen.

Yes but today we have people who buy a lot and re-sell for profit in order to fund themselves. For example, buying 100 Nebulites for $500 and selling for $1,000.

It's not just the MapleStory community and certainly isn't a direct outcome of the game changes. It's the anonymity that the internet provides and the online community's realisation of how to abuse it.

Just think about roughly when internet trolls became a thing. The time period probably coincides when you started to feel the community had gone worse.

Um, I feel that the people in Broni / Khroa are awesome. Nobody is toxic...because what's the point?

Like @GlitterPumas stated, the community has always been terrible. It's just that not many people were to the point that they realized this.

It is much easier getting to around end-game bossing now where as there were few before. This is not only due to dupers/exploits and whatnot, the game has been made drastically easier to spoonfeed those who have been complaining since ever. Obviously things were going to change because of this making everyone able to do what few were able to in the past.

With that being said, finding out how much you need to spend or how much time you and work you need to invest is also because of this. Since everyone is able to do it, it's only a matter of calculating what you need and whatnot. It's inevitable.

The game has always had an advantage to those who paid. It was just much easier doing it when there were few people doing it. The reasoning behind it is, you invest in a range and you sell boss items and boss runs[ie. HT/Zak] and you make your money back into the pool and upgrade from there. If everyone is able to do this and is doing this, there is no value in this.

Sorry to say Mae, Bera is one of the servers known to do majority of the exploitations and dupes so your information may be skewed. However, it happens in every server to an extent.

The drama thing, it happens everywhere but I don't see as much of it as I used to in Scania. I actually think this calmed down. It's just usually friends and few frenemies smega-ing against one another now whereas the drama was way worse before. This was always there and will pretty much always be there because someone will always get pissed and try to expose another person flaunting who has the bigger balls.

I think people still enjoy the presence of one another but with less effort needed for the grind and whatnot, more people tend to afk mind-conversation which isn't always pleasing which is pretty much a problem.

As for leveling onwards of 210, there's really no point unless it's a personal goal. You can do everything you need to do at 210. After that it's just a matter of grinding after that.

As for things now, people are just complaining how things used to be and how the change was for the worse. But when you're balancing wealth classes in a game to the point that everyone does the same thing, it's inevitable.
