Is it the same as jailbreaking an iPhone?
Almost. With rooting you get direct access to all of the phone's capabilities and developer options, not with jail breaking
Hardware access. Useful especially for flashing to new Android versions on carriers that don't have the update.
tfw your phone's only available 4.1 ROM turns off 4G and camera access
everything you need but decent games
I prefer it rooted because you can flash a 4.2.1 custom rom at the moment, also runs fast and smoothly. You can also gain access to rooted apps like 'Wireless Tether' or 'Titanium Backup. Additionally, you can change how the phone looks with some roms like the battery icon or make the whole phone look like the S3.
