Take an arbitrary positive integer x0. If this is even, then write x1=x0/2. If x0 is odd, then write x1=3x0+1. If x1 is even, then x2=x1/2. If x1 is odd, then x2=3x1+1. Continue to define xn.
Prove: For every arbitrary x0 we pick, there exists an n such that xn=1.
