how do you know if someone wants to be your friend?

K well.. let me start off by saying all my friends are girls and I kinda feel happy when someone tries to talk to me that's a guy because there's only a few of them and nice because everyone in this school is full of b.sssss, all the guys that want to be my friends are just wierd/unpopular/ some are even considered losers by media standards. Anyways there's this one guy that I've had (1) class every year and it's grade11 now and we'll have a class in grade 12 forsure.

He's described as one of the caucasian guys in the "white crew" those hockey jocks that chew that nasty stuff and think they're "cool" but for some reason he's nice to me and tries to talk to me even though it'd be considered random. I know this isn't just a peer thing because I talk to nobody in my first period english class which he has with me besides the teacher and this ADD kid. So why would he even bother? We had Gym in gr9 (had no friends+ awkward to change) Eng gr10 and he read something personal about my relationship with my mom (no one in our class knew our teacher was going to make our peers mark it so I had no time to fix it) also I saw him everyday for two weeks at credit recovery class at lunch.

Within the past few months being second semester he's made small-talk asking me the strangest questions a few times or saying "gj mark" when I donated chocolate. Anyways the reason why we don't talk at all is because he never sits near me, and I'm asian.. he's white it's just out of the 'norm' & people usually judge me at school but idc attitude is always apparent to those who TRULY know me! Quality>quantity. Since he's in my class next year and possibly next semester I thought'd if I should "TRY" to be his friend. He likes the song c'mon by ke$ha which I saw on his twitter I thought that was pretty slick

SUMMARY: This guy that I don't talk to.. but it seems like he wants to talk to me and be my friend but doesn't know how, and not many guys (and girls) are nice to me because my voice is kinda high pitched. Anyways I think he's really nice but I'm unsure of what his intentions are. Since he had grade10 with me (which I had friends in that class) he knows I'm not the quiet/reserved/calm person everyone has the impression of me.. I'm like a mute child in period1 but I'm really a fun/outgoing/talkative introvert (compelete opposites ik) SO what are his motives/intentions?
