One is a phone with contract + 3g if you choose to (but I'd imagine it comes with texting and would be better anyways) and one is contract-free and can act like a phone through apps and wifi

Newer iphones have a better quality battery compared to its past versions, but due to the processor and such, it can eat up that battery faster, just depends on how you use it.
get a new iphone if you can get a good contract!
and um, i have an ipod 3rd gen and it's pretty thin so, i'd imagine it has way less battery % than iphone's not sure though

Probably have the same battery. how long the battery lasts depends on how you use them.
