Probably time I quit MapleStory for Good
I upgraded my laptop to Windows 8 in mid January, ever since then I've been getting the same error. Another copy of MapleStory is running blah blah. It's been a month and some weeks now and I haven't been able to play. I've done everything, un-installed, reinstalled, un-installed using Revo Uninstaller, reinstalled again. Launch from my laptop, launch from website using multiple browsers and still no luck. Nexon's tech support forum is crap and sending an Ahn Report always fails. Others have the same problem and no solution so far, I guess it's just my time to quit.
I've been playing Maple since it just came out, yep, my account is as old as the game. I don't even have a level 200, partly because I played on and off because of school and I always created a bunch of characters instead of focusing on one. It's been a good run, seen this game develop a lot but this is probably it for me.
Maybe I'll try playing again in the summer, hopefully they would have dealt their compatibility issues and what not but until then goodbye Maplers and Basilers alike.
PS: If anyone knows Namina or KyvoChu from LoveLess on Bera, please direct them to this thread so that may know the reason for my inactivity. Thanks in advance.

2)Get windows XP.exe
3)Download windows XP onto virtual machine
4)Download maplestory and have fun.
Don't quit for good if you're gonna try to come back in the summer.

im getting same error as you, but i already deleted mule character, im quitting for good... im already playing minecraft so yeah, escape while you can!
windows 8 was made for tablets getting it on a laptop is just a downgrate of ur system

i tried to play MS from my laptop too and i got the same problem (maplestory is running already) which is not.
then i just back to my desktop.

have you tried window task manager?
open it and go to Processes and find maplestory and END it.. then try again..
