Help Understanding DoT

Hi Guys! I've recently made a F/P Mage in Renegades (obv non-funded) and I've read that Stacking DoT will help me kill mobs more efficiently.
The problem is, I have NO IDEA what this means. I see that some skills say "Damage Over Time: 1xx%" , but how do I use this 'stacking' to my benefit.

Please understand that I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about this, so any help is appreciated.

My question has been answered! If anyone else needed clarification with DoT Please refer to the response below.
The stacking is mostly useful in mobs that have high hp, in other words monster that took you some time to kill and you just don't 1hko, 2hko or even 3 hko them, or huge maps when it take you some time to reach the monsters after they respawn, in those cases DoT moves like mist can make your training more efficient. First you need to know that DoT stand for Damage over time, which mean that the monster is going to receive constant damage for a given time after the initial attack. Stacking mean that you use more than one skill with DoT effect on the same monster, making the constant damage higher and hence you kill the monster faster eventually. For F/P mage this technique is particularly important at 4th job since one of your main move use the DoT damage inflicted on a monster as a multiplier for the total damage of the move (mist explosion), so the more DoT you stack the more damage you can inflict when casting explosion, beside the fact that DoT stacking is pretty good extra damage in his own.

Sorry for my crude english, I'm not a native speaker.
This helped me a lot. Thank you for spending the time to explain it!
