If a criminal was not sentenced to prison how would they feel in the real world? Knowing that their trust has been lost for a long time if not forever. That everyones watching them and their mistake will haunt them daily. Also, if the criminal went on to preach, would it make them a hypocrite. A convicted thief telling others not to steal. A murderer telling others not to kill. A rapist campaigning against sexual assault. Would this be hypocrisy or what?
