[header=intro]Introduction[/header]
Back to Top

Well I was inspired to make this guide after reading the one currently in the Guide section and realising how outdated it was. Credits still goes to the original Basil guide maker, @Nightwind90.

Original guide: here

This guide is a much more updated guide, which will hopefully include everything about healing potions, from NPC purchasable ones, to crafted ones in Alchemy as well as various other bits and pieces.

This guide generally applies to GMS, therefore all pricing information, potion NPCs refer only to GMS, however parts can be also applied to other MS versions.

For all Item sections (including Herbalism, Alchemy and Silent Crusade sections)
The following features are shown for most items:
[*]Name of item
[*]Effects if any
[*]Maximum number of items that can be held per item slot
[*]NPC Selling price
[*]Locations from where the item can be purchased if any
[*]Price the item can be purchased for according to the location

[header=bestformoney]Value for Money[/header]
Back to Top

NOTE: Alchemy potions are not included here as they will nearly ALWAYS be better value than purchasable potions, however fatigue points will generally hinder the amount of Alchemy potions one can craft per day.

When it comes to potions and their prices, make sure you know how much HP and or MP you want healed before going ahead and buying them. This should generally be around 50-90% of your HP/MP, although there are specific reasons when you will want a potion that will heal all of your HP or MP or even lower than 50%. Sometimes even if the potion is worth a bargain, your HP and MP simply do not meet the best potential for those potions. Also it will depend on how often you use your potions, which itself is determined by where you train.

If you have methods of obtaining potions for free, such as from bosses, then use those instead. Its certainly cheaper. Skills which help recover HP and or MP such as Blood Drain are also very useful, so don't disregard them entirely. One skill very useful in conjunction with % based potions is Hyper Body, which can either be obtained from partying with a Spearman/Dragon Knight/Dark Knight or from potentialed Bottomwear with Decent Hyper Body.

HP Items
1. Red Potions, Eggs, Meats, Red Pills (Most stores sell these items for a price of 0.1 mesos per 1 HP. Red Pills can only be bought in Ludibrium.)
2 SC Simple Health Potions (They are slightly cheaper than Orange Potions and White Potions at 0.3 mesos per 1 HP, yet heal more HP than even a White Potion, so they are very cost efficient.)
2.1 Orange Potions, White Potions, Orange Pills, White Pills, Hot Dogs, Fried Chickens (Most stores sell the first two for a price of 0.32 mesos per 1 HP, the other four are not found in many stores. These are generally alternatives to the Silent Crusade potions.)
3. SC Common Health Potions (Best cost efficient potion at this stage at 0.35 mesos per 1 HP, with only a slight increase from the Simple variety.)
4. SC Advanced Health Potions, SC Superior Health Potions (Like their lower relatives, they are the most cost efficient HP potion in terms of value, at around 0.53 mesos per HP and 0.6 mesos per HP respectively. However they do require a minimum level of 40 and several medals acquired by the character before they can be bought.)
4.1 Barbarian Elixirs (If one cannot do the Silent Crusade quests yet and especially for Warrior classes, Barbarian Elixirs are still the best alternative. Singapore HP potions are also viable however Barbarian Elixirs can hold up to 150 per slot as opposed to them only holding 100 per slot.)
5. Honsters (One should only buy these if they have over at least 4667 HP for a ratio of 1 mesos per HP, it will become cheaper the more HP you have, they can only be bought in NLC. They become more convenient to use than the Silent Crusade potions later on, especially due to the fact they are a % based potion, and not a fixed number.)

MP Items
1. Blue Potions, Oranges, Blue Pills (Most stores sell these items for a price of 0.2 mesos per 1 MP. Blue Pills can only be bought in Ludibrium.)
2. Lemons, Mana Elixirs, Mana Elixir Pills, Salads (Most stores sell the first two items for a price around 0.62 - 0.64 mesos per MP, the other two aren't found in many stores)
2.1 SC Basic Magic Potions, SC Common Magic Potions (Their mesos:MP ratio of 1.1 mesos per MP isn't very tempting. However, they do heal more MP than Mana Elixirs and are cheaper than Pure Waters.)
3. Sorcerer Elixirs (These go for 1 mesos per MP, which is a good mesos:MP ratio. They can also hold up to 150 per slot. Sadly, they can only be bought in NLC, hence why you should buy them in bulk)
3.1 SC Advanced Magic Potions, SC Superior Magic Potions (They have a slightly higher mesos:MP than Sorcerer Elixirs though are found in numerous locations compared to just one location for Sorcerer Elixirs. That being said, they still offer superb value. Like their HP counterparts, the character buying these needs to be level 40 and have the right medal needed to unlock them.)
4. Mana Bulls (Though only found in NLC, they offer the best value for those with high amounts of MP. One should only buy them if they have over 4667 MP for a ratio of 1 mesos per MP, from then on it becomes cheaper the more MP one has. Like their Honster counterparts, because they are % based, they become a lot more convenient to use over the Silent Crusade potions later on.)

Mixed Items
Firstly, these should only be used when the item can satisfy both your HP and MP needs. One will need to evaluate how often they pot as well, to see if its worth getting or just use HP and MP potions separately. With the arrival of the professions as well as the Silent Crusade, most of these have become obsolete. However, when it comes to boss battles, these will be handy, especially for those bosses that can lower both your HP and MP to 1.

0.1 Cakes (though they do offer good value at 0.15 mesos per HP and MP, its simply not worth getting, considering Red Potions heal 0.1 mesos per HP and Blue Potions heal 0.2 mesos per MP. The values cancel out, so there's no point in getting these. That being said, if you really would like to use them, go ahead)
1. Supreme Pizzas (one of the best Mixed Items in existence, healing around 0.75 mesos per HP and 0.55 mesos per MP. Unfortunately, they can only be bought in one location)
2. Cherry Pie (a great bargain, healing 0.75 mesos per HP and MP, and providing an additional mini attack buff, but the attack buff is quite useless as better potions can be used for that)
2.1 Ginseng Root (unless used for a specific reason such as a Dark Knight's Berserk, these aren't exactly that useful as they only heal 40% of HP and MP. Indeed, it may be simply better to use Ginger Ales, that being said, they're still not bad price wise)
3. Ginger Ales (should be used once HP and or MP is past 5067 for a ratio of 1 mesos per HP and MP, with price values becoming better with increased stats. For those training with Hyper Body, this is a great option, for everyone else, it's still very good. These are a best buy unless one can get their hands on Power Elixirs, which can't be bought normally)

TIP: If you have characters you no longer play, station them in NLC, and load them with a good chunk of mesos. Whenever you run out of potions, just get your mule to buy them and transfer them over through storage. This goes especially for potions during the higher levels. Credits to @Pavchka for this.

[header=professions]Herbalism and Alchemy Professions[/header]
Back to Top

The Chaos patch brought with it a variety of new features. One of them would be the Professions system, which replaced the previous Maker system, but in a much expanded form. The professions related to potion making are the Herbalism and Alchemy professions. To obtain your professions, you must go to the town of Ardentmill, which can be accessed through the portal labelled "Crafting Town", which is found in most towns. One most first talk to Grant, the village elder, before being able to learn any profession. Once done, talk to Saffron to learn Herbalism, followed by Ally to learn Alchemy.

Creating potions through Alchemy is a 3 step process.
1) With Herbalism, you can gather seeds and flowers needed for Alchemy. These can be found in various maps in Maple World, or in Saffron's Secret Herb Patch.Some other ingredients can be bought through the NPC Nack. They are gathered through the use of a Herb Bag and a Shovel, and by utilising NPC chat. Saffron gives out Tickets to his secret herb patch for herbalists level 1-4.
2) Again with Herbalism, you can then craft materials out of the seeds and flowers, alongside the use of some items bought from Nack.
3) With Alchemy, using the materials you have created through Herbalism, as well as a few other items bought from Nack, you can then create potions. They are made in sets of 50.

However, whenever a profession is performed, fatigue points are accumulated. Each item created through Herbalism increases fatigue by 1, and each item created through Alchemy increases fatigue by 3. Fatigue does drop by 5 every hour, resets to zero at 12 AM Midnight Maple Time (Pacific Time). Fatigue points can be reduced through the purchase of certain potions from the NPC Nack, as well as through the use of Fatigue Reset Coupons from the Cash Shop, which cost 2500 NX for one.

TIP:Like with stationing a mule in NLC for NLC potions, you may also station one in Ardentmill (in fact, you can use the one in NLC for Ardentmill as well, seeing how there's a portal to Ardentmill in NLC). That way, potions can be gathered easily by your mule, leaving your main character to concentrate on grinding. Credits to @IcyHub for this tip.

NOTE: All potions made through alchemy have a level 30 requirement, due to the fact that professions can only be learnt after reaching level 30.

Through performing Herbalism, the Empathy trait increases, which in turn increases your max MP and quest EXP.

Alchemists can also disassemble equipment into item crystals. Not only can they disassemble their own equipment, but if they create a disassembler (from which the recipes for them are 2mil and 5mil respectively, others may use their disassembler (for a fee) to disassemble their equipment.

Creating potions through alchemy has alongside the Slient Crusade and NLC, become one of the most cost efficient ways of obtaining potions. Here, the cost is generally through the fatigue earned, time spent crafting and obtaining seeds, as well as the prices of several materials and ingredients needed to make these potions (bought through Nack in Ardentmill).

[header=ingredients]Ingredients[/header]
Back to Top

These items are needed to make materials through Herbalism, and can be found in maps throughout the Maple World or in Saffron's Secret Herb Patch. A few are purchased from Nack in Ardentmill.

NOTE: Only ingredients needed for healing potions will be listed. Buff and transformation potions will not be included in this guide (yet).

[header=silentcrusade]Silent Crusade[/header]
Back to Top

The Silent Crusade (SC) is a system implemented from JMS. Basically, one kills a various numbers of bosses through quests and in return will obtain medals. These medals grant the character the ability to purchase certain items, including potions, equipment and scrolls. The SC NPC is Wence Victoria, who is found in most towns. Beside him is the Silent Crusade Supply Box, which is where Silent Crusade exclusive items can be purchased. Items are restricted by the SC medal the character has, so to be able to purchase them all, one must have the required medal as well as the mesos.

SC potions, like their predecessor Miki the Merchant in NLC, have revolutionised cost efficient potion prices. Most of their potions have become among the most cost efficient potion for the amount of HP and MP they heal.

[header=purchasevsalchemy]Purchasable Potions vs Alchemy[/header]
Back to Top

Purchasable potions have always had one advantage, that you could buy as many of them as needed, of course so long as you have the mesos to pay for them. As for Alchemy, you can only make 25 lots of 50 potions/pills, totalling 1250 (excluding Advanced Health/Mana Potions/Pills, for which you can only make 20 lots, totalling 1000), however when you look at it, it is very unlikely you'll use that many potions in one day. And of course, provided you recover 5 fatigue points every hour and purchase fatigue recovery potions from the NPC Nack, you will be able to create even more potions/pills. However, when crafting both HP and MP potions/pills, you may not have enough fatigue points to craft enough for both, so that is where purchasable potions come in as back up.

When New Leaf City was first opened to players, the potions it offered revolutionised potion prices. Not only that, but they were the first large scale potions to hold up to 150 per slot. Well now even they have been outdone, as most potions can hold up to 300 per slot, with pills at 600, while Alchemy potions can now store up to 400 per slot, with alchemy pills up to 800. Apart from the % based potions, NLC potions do not really offer much of an advantage now.

Okay, perhaps the only true advantage left that purchasable potions/pills have over the Alchemy ones is the time factor, considering you have to use up time to harvest herbs, craft materials and then create potions/pills, whereas purchasable ones are just one transaction and off you go training. It really boils down to how much motivation you have. If anything, the only purchasable potions/pills that are of any real value in comparison to Alchemy ones would be the % based potions.

Basically, Alchemy potions are better than purchasable potions in every way except the amount of time needed to get them.

This guide is by no means finished. There's still quite a lot to go, and hopefully with the community's support, more can be added to this guide. Below are some aspects yet to be covered in this guide, but should be included in the future:

[*]Full implementation of Elixirs & Power Elixirs at Free Market prices (partially done)
[*]Buff potions, including Onyx Apples, Energizers and Alchemy ones.
[*]Potion Droplist (for specific potions) (thanks to @Pavchka for suggestion)
[*]Pet and Familiar notes regarding HP and MP (thanks to @Kyuguy for suggestion)
[*]Inter-server prices, potion NPC locations (MSEA, EMS etc.) (may be implemented depending on demand)

Can anyone please confirm if the Silent Crusade potions are still purchaseable?
Sorry for bumping an old thread but it felt pointless to make one just for this question.
Thanks!

@KyuGuy: I'll need some help with that, but yeah that can be considered.

Add familiars that heal HP/MP, maybe?
@Pavchka: With the higher Alchemy potions, the only comparable regular potions would be the percent-based ones, such as Honsters, Mana Bulls, Ginger Ales etc. But you'd have to have a large amount of HP or MP for those to be of better value than the alchemy potions, though they would be better than making the Advanced Alchemy Potions, as you don't exactly have an endless supply of recipes.

A common drop list for Potions...I could consider that, but I'd do it for only specific potions, such as Power Elixirs. People won't be bothered with collecting low level potions.

As for why Power Elixirs aren't as available in supply, I'd say most people don't bother selling those on Basil, so they'd probably be in the FM (which will be annoying to look through every FM, unless you use an Owl of Minerva). Maybe people prefer to make their own potions with Alchemy now, or have just replaced using Power Elixirs with Ginger Ales.
Right, so it may depend on class as well (I as a Shadower for example don't need percentage-based potions for the time being). I agree with what you said about a potion droplist. Most potions aren't worth it, only the "larger potions" like Elixirs, Power Elixirs and maybe Sunset Dew and the like might be.

I'm not really up-to-date as far as the prices of resources needed for Alchemy are concerned (haven't played in a while). Of course we can harvest our own materials and make potions that way, but there (as you already said) is a limit to how much we can harvest and some higher potions require recipes*. Do you think the higher Alchemy potions give better bang for the buck than comparable regular potions? /endnoobmode
I think a section "where which potions are very common drops" doesn't really apply any more right now, right? I used to look for Power Elixirs at Galoperas.
*For the record: I tried looking for auctions, but couldn't find any in Broa. Either those things are ridiculously cheap, or they are very rare, or people aren't interested in them.
