Phantom and the thieves
So I recently came back to maple after a 6-8 month break. I am having to start all over because of stupid hackers so I will be unfunded-medium funded. Wondering why do people say phantoms are not that good. Which thief out of phantom, shad, DB (I know can't make db now, will in the future) would be best for my meso range.
I like fast toons. With fast attacks. But I don't really want to be weak. Phantom sounds awesome with all the buffs they can get from other classes especially HS. Because that almost guarentees a spot for LHC even if weak.

In Bera, I still see main Phantom books go for 15-25+mil.
DBs are okay, I personally don't like the fact that you need to get skillbooks, which is ~150mil or SoK.
NLs are cheap, but at the same time they've lost their former glory.
Shadowers are good, nothing I can really say about it.
Dual blades are pretty good, Phantoms have received a nerf on their stolen buffs quite a while back (not sure if you knew that but I'm stating it anyways) Night Lords seem to need a lot of funding these days. Shadowers are apparently better than Dual Blades after their hyper skills but I haven't really seen much footage of Shadowers after their hypers. Either way, you might wanna try all of them on a separate server and see which one you find the most fun.

Well over the next several months I can probably do 100-250k NX. Not sure what that would get me.
phantom is only really good with funding. It deals more damage than a NL with the same funding (my phantom was as strong as my NL with the same equips at lvl 135 while my NL was lvl 160) however for no funding DBs are really good (if you are willing to spend 10-15k Nx on it that is mandatory). If you dont want to spend Nx, and dont have that much money, I would recommend playing kaiser (if you can still make one), mercedes are good too with low funding, DS, mechs and BaMs are also decent with low funding.
Thieves unfortunately are one of those classes that usually require a lot of funding to be as good as a lower funded (any class previously listed). If you think you could get to a decent-high funding, then phantoms are good.
Shadower is good with hyper's, also for me Phantom is ok
