i've never met an attacking bishop, so i asked one "why don't you fight? your skills are awesome!"
and he said, if you want an attacking bishop, make one yourself.
so i did.
any words of wisdom my god-fearing preachers? (referring to the job name in case anyone gets touchy)

Im a level 143 bishop and I never attack in lhc
Problem is, all my so called "attacking" skills suck in damage (Big Bang, Genesis [since it's unspam-able], Shining Ray, Holy Arrow)
I guess the only decent damage skill is Angel Ray and I have yet to get that from Zak.
So until my Angel Ray, I'm stuck saving SP and not attacking in lhc parties
@Wush Why not use heal? Hell is when you had to use magic claw at ant tunnel back in the day and ask for chronos when monster carnival came out <3 ... Yes i was a slow, and still am, leveler back then lol ... Holy arrow at lvl 1 is good to if you don't want to use heal sometimes.
OT: Only advice I can give is to have fun with your bish and make goals like @Icephoenix21 said. I like to make little range goal like increasing by a mere 500, or get a new equip and so on.

Advise..hm... I guess if I were to give any type of the sort, it'd be to be consistent, persistent, and not content with the status quo.
For myself, I always made little goals, and worked at achieving those goals. I didn't care to be like all the other 'hs mules' out there.

Honestly you don't have much to worry about these days. Back in the day, there were specific maps where you'd train in order to maximise your damage output (on undeads/holy weak) which you honestly don't need to do anymore. Heal was your best friend and undeads were more scared of you than you were of them. When a monster wasn't undead, you had to turn to magic claw which only hit one monster for horrid damage (lul1stjobskill).
These days you don't have to worry about all this, although training on undead/holy weak monsters would still benefit you, it's not a necessity. You should be quite capable with taking on non-holy weak mobs with all the revamps we've had.
But from one attacking bishop to another, I wish you the best of luck! I'm sure you'll come to love your bishop once you appreciate the capabilities of it.
Back then, Shining Ray had more delay and didn't stun, and Angel Ray was pretty weak. We're fairly competent attackers now, so you have a lot less to worry about. If you're unfunded, your biggest challenge might be finding the Angel Ray 10 skill book, which the regular Zakum now drops at a really low rate.
