General Mage

Are I/l still strong when theyre not compared to F/p mages? They both seem like very fun classes to make, but I'm not sure which one I want to make. I keep seeing though that F/P mages are apparently better in damage wise because of their DoT skills stacking, but I/L skills seem cool and chain lightning as well. Damage is not going to be a major factor because I'm going to be making a mage with a friend and we're going to have equal funding. I'm just concerned if I'll be weak to where my friend will be doing the most of the work when we're training. So, if I do make a I/L, would I be able to be as well off as my friend while training?
