What to do if work overpaid me

Ok here's what happened.

I had a 4 hour closing shift on Friday. I forgot to punch out, so I had trouble punching in next day at 10:30 as the system said "Can not punch in. Still on clock"

So I told my supervisor, who told me that he will let my manager know. I don't think he did because he always forgets stuff. So when my manager came in, I told him right away. He said that he will fix it. I was able to punch out at the end of the day. So I thought all was good.

I only worked 28 hours last week. I get paid $10.50 an hour. I make $366 when I work 40 hours a week after taxes/union fees.

But for some reason, I was paid $362 today for my last week's work. I am only supposed to receive around $240.

What do I do? Do I hush hush? Or be honest and tell him?

+1 Although I'm not qualified to give legal advice, if they find out (which is likely to be the case), they will ask for it back anyways. In that case just give it to them if you don't want further repercussions.

If you want to save yourself from what could potentially be an issue down the line (they can sue you for theft, for example, by not repaying them back), you could just tell them straight away right now. After all it's only $122, but the courts will cost you a lot more.

I strongly suggest you let them know. Dishonesty in such matters can really screw you over. You can't exactly claim you didn't know cause you should be well aware that you didn't work enough to get that much money so when it comes out and you keep it they know you weren't honest. Plus, you never know if they possibly test you or your honesty. In either scenario it's safer to just return it or at least tell them so they can decide whether to ask for it back or let you keep it as reward for your honesty.

I don't know about civilian life, but in military if you get over payed they'll just not pay you or pay even less each paycheck. meaning if I usually make about 4k a month but they gave me 5k, they may give me a inconsistent amount of money until it equals out i.e. I can either get paid 1k or 200$ next pay and that would be terrible. So be smart and don't go on a shopping spree pretty much.

Oh and yeah, let them know too. I don't feel life you should be feeling any kind of tenseness from this.

this happened to me once and i actually forgot about it. if the money was released then nothing you can do tbh, it is their mistake. they cannot reprehend you for their mistake. it is not your job to assist the payroll clerk

+1 @eternalmemory: No.

Tell them again what happened and make sure they fix it. You'll most likely just be docked on your next pay the amount of hours they overpaid you.

@eternalmemory: lol No I don't live in Toronto, I live in Sauga. If you drive the way you talk on basil, God be with them.

@eternalmemory: You take 2 hours to get to work...that's brutal. It used to take me 40mins with no traffic and I wanted to shoot myself. How do you manage that?

@eternalmemory: Not to be rude, but are you on some sort of medication? You have a tendency to go off topic in a handicapped sort of way.

Toronto is far too expensive to live in, imo. Why not relocate closer to your job? lol You surely do not have to move out of the country to see lower housing prices.
