There was some talk about them considering allowing GMs to work from home so they could live anywhere, but I never heard anything more about that.

Well, it's kind of like if I wanted to work at Rogers Centre... it'd be tough to do that from LA.
GMs go to work 9-5 in the Nexon building, just like anyone else with a "normal" job, so you have to live where the job is.
