What do you think about instrumental music

Hi Basilers,

All my life I've always been intrested in Instrumental music. I have been playing piano for a very long time now and I've been drumming for a couple of years as well.
For some reason I don't seem to care about the lyrics of a song at all. I do like music with vocals, but I mostly listen to the vocals as another instrument, another melody, the lyrics don't seem to attrect me.

For this reason I prefer to listen to instrumental music and with this I mostly mean Jazz, bossa nova, blues and latin music.
I really like some instrumental hard rock/melodic metal songs as well, but that's only when I'm really feeling like it.
Of course, a lot of this music has vocals in its songs, but I prefer the instrumental songs.

I was wondering what people around here are thinking about this kind of music?
And how are vocals in a song for you, are they just as I see them or are lyrics actually appealing to you?

I also really wonder how many people here like to listen to Jazz, blue bossa, latin etc. as well. And I am talking about the modern music of this kind, not the very classical music. However, I do like a lot of this music as well, but it's not what I'm listening to occasionally.

Discuss anything related to this down here and feel free to PM me to chat a bit about this subject.

~Reborn.
@APistolCame: Dang that sounds awesome! I really wish I had an opportunity to play with some real musicians rather than the chorus kids who just want to make an acoustic cover of a pop song. Sadly, I don't have any way to record my songs. I've been thinking of buying something to do that but I have no idea where to start honestly. Goodluck with your performances in Germany by the way! I hope you guys stay safe and have some fun.
Thank you very much I bet that if you keep going with your music, you will get your chance soon enough.
The best way to start recording songs for a acoustic piano is IMO: A recorder from Roland or any music brands who sell recorders. Just a cheap one with a nice micophone.
The best way to start recording songs for a keyboard/synth is IMO: Buying a MIDI to USB cable so you can conncet your keyboard/synth to your PC and you can start recording with programs such as Cubase and Sibelius. I hope this can help you getting started with recording your music
@APostalCame While in highschool I was in a couple groups but it was never a permanent thing. I usually just filled in the spot for a group that needed a piano player because most of the piano players at the school were the kind of players who just play basic three note chords in the right hand and stomp out octaves of the root with the left which always urks me. >.< I do compose my own but I wouldn't really say that I'm all that great. I've always been more of a cover artist honestly. I usually just pick up my Real Book (sixth addition) and go to town on improving some of the songs in there. Sometimes my girlfriend and I play some jazz pieces together (she plays clarinet). Also I did symphonic band in Highschool so I know my way around a set of vibes pretty well haha.

@Kadder Ministry of Sound compilation, huh? I'll have to check this out.
Oh wow, that sounds so familiar It's like it was me who typed that story, only my Girlfriend does not play any instruments.
I've been playing for quite a while with a combo now and I have been doing some jobs with a friend of me as well.
(We played in the band of a artist who finished 3th of the Dutch version of 'My name is Michael')
I mostly don't play with people around my age, becuase they mostly just want to make some fun and play a bit, where I want to be a bit more serious.
I'm 17 right now, and most musicians in my band are around 30.
I compose some music with cubase, but nothing really worth mentioning.
Next week I'm going to germany for some performances, really looking forward to it!
Do you have some music of you on your pc you could send to me? I'd like to hear some
You could also PM me if you don't want it to go too public.

Wow thanks again
This will do very well since I also got a metronome.
you're welcome glad I helped you and I wish you the best of luck with playing!
With your metronome, try using it while practicing, but try to get rid of it when you start to perform the song.

I love instrumental music. I can't stand modern music / modern metal with the crappy lyrics and singing nowadays, which is why I listen to instrumental Metal. It's just that to me, it seems like an instrument can explain the mood of the song so much more than lyrics can.

Thanks for the advice
I do listen and look at how they play the song once I get the gist of it.
I just have to start working on my rhythm so that i can get a general idea of how a song goes when I read a sheet.
To practice your rythm, you could always do some easy rythm practices on your Pc (or keyboard?). But you could also download a program such as Final notepad, open a sheet, make the computer play it, and try to follow it, so you can feel the rythm on the paper easier.

Song is the noun of sing. But I myself do like instrumental music more than lyyrical music, especially when theres a nice melody and a deep bass
Love Instrumentals.
Especially with violins.

Its just that perfect harmony that all these instruments make that make it so good.
I really like instrumentals that are progressive, building a climax, then BAM!

Off topic:
I started playing piano but I can't seem to sight read. I know it takes a while to learn but could you share some tips?
I have a bad habit of looking up tutorials in youtube and just memorising the whole song without even looking at the sheet
Playing piano doesn't have to involve reading the music. But what I want to tell you is that it is really important to know your music. 'What am I playing? In what key am I playing' Etc. This way you can very easily identify your music and pick up new songs and skills faster.
I suggest you to start listening a lot to a handfull of pianist which you like. Look at what they are doing, how do they play certain parts of a song, how do they bring emotion into their music? And I also suggest you to decide what music you want to play in the first place. It is good to play all kinds of music, but it is better to specialize yourself in one kind of music. Write down what you play as well, this is a really good practice. Try to hear what people are playing, identify it, and write it down.
Feel free to listen some of my music and my band's music at Youtube/IvarKlootwijk.
If you like to listen to classical music, I strongly suggest you to listen to some music of Yundi Li since he plays very good and with a lot of emotion.
You might also wanne listen to some great jazz pianists like Ray Charles, jaqcues loussier etc.
If you have anything else to ask, feel free.

EDIT: @Storm1029 It's good to see that some people around here share the same interests. I am not at home right now, so sadly I can't listen to it right now. But I will surely do so once I come home. I'll let you know what I think about it
Do you compose your own music, play in bands?

@aboyinabox I agree what you say. I think that too many music these days are easily made with the computer. Make a awsome beat, copy it 40 times, make a bridge, make some crappy lyrics, and done! And no, that's not happening to all the music today, because there are still some very very good artists/song writers, but I just feel like some very good and not computer-made (every song is computer-made today, but I mean music which was originally made by playing an instrument and not with just FL studio or something) is dieing because of this. A lot of people tend to listen to 'easy' music instead of 'difficult' music.

@NapalmDe4th It is true that Lyrics add a lot of emotion to a music, but I have to ensure you that Vocals are not the only way to convey emotions.
A good musician can bring so many emotions by playing his instrument, the listener only has to 'hear' these emotions. There is a huge difference between just playing a song on a piano and playing a song with a lot of dynamics and really going into the music. So yes, it is true that lyrics add emotions to songs, but no, it's not the only way IMO.
