Naruto manga when sasuke returns to konoha and turns good o.o
Shinsekai Yori. I thought it was a slice of life anime then it became really dark.

This show is so good.
I would say Monster.
Narutaru, Kaleido Star, Psycho Armor Govarian, Seikai no Senki, H20: Footprints in the Sand, Paranoia Agent, Denpa teki na Kanojo, Princess Tutu, Excel Saga, Scrapped Princess, Asu no Yoichi, Blue Gender, Rose of Versailles, and Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom.

I would have to say Shingeki no Kyojin. I'm not talking about the anime, but the fandom itself is pretty unexpected.

Pokemon - I thought Ash was going to be the very best that no one ever was.
Both School Days and Madoka Magica.
I liked Madoka Magica better though. Still both worth watching.

I was pretty surprised when PSG suddenly developed a plot in Episode 6.
Puni Puni Poemy and Excel Saga. But I'm sure the whole premise of those shows were built on being unexpected.
Madoka Magica for sure. Everyone who's wondering what's so special an anime that's no different from stuff like Cardcaptor Sakura should get rid of that skepticism.

I think everyone who's seen it was surprised and taken back by Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni.
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica is what came into my mind first.
The series is advertised like a typical magical girl show for little girls, like Sailor Moon.
Nowhere in hell did I expect the story to be so dark and mature. It's really good too.
Episode 5 of Shingeki no Kyojin really caught me off guard.
