Spell Traces are basically a new system of scrolling, for most weapons 120+, the spell trace offers 15% (9 ATT), 30% (7 ATT), 70% (5 ATT), and 100% (3 ATT) scrolls. The number of spell traces required for each scroll depends on the level of the item you are scrolling. Ex. My Fafnir Claw requires 507 spell traces for a 15% scroll on my item. The lower % scroll, the higher number of spell traces needed. Spell traces do not boom items. You can obtain spell traces from regular mobs/bosses or you can buy them from the FM. In order to use your spell traces, double click on the spell trace in your ETC inventory or click the Red Hammer Icon on the bottom right of your inventory. A new window pops up and if you place an item into the window, it'll show you all the types of scrolls the spell trace has to offer. The new window also allows you to enhance items with mesos after your item has 0 slots, the cost per enhancement depends on the item. Generally, enhancing your items with this does NOT explode your items depending on the item, most items will not explode on failure but items like Tyrant gear will have a chance to explode after the 6th star.

In Short: New scroll system, cheaper and easier to scroll items than before the introduction of spell trace.

Spell Traces are new ways to scroll your gear.
There are also ways to enhance with mesos using the same interface.

Actually, the economy has gotten MUCH better in the past week. Nexon has finally cracked on botters (for now), the number of clean slates/prots/spell traces has significantly decreased as seen in the FM and the price of them have increased. The $ for meso ratio has increased & the NX rate decreased. Even though this may or may not be short term, it sure is something.

I would say don't come back. The economy is really messed up, but if your the type to take advantage this is the best time.
