Let me clarify some things that dawnemp may have confused you on.
Regardless of whether someone has badge, you need 6 people.
If at least 1 member of your party has badge and is present, then full party does not need to be there (example: if you have badge, you can just go there alone and get friends to be in the expedition, but not actually there.) Badge allows you to skip the party quest portion which requires 6 people.
If no one has badge, then all 6 members must be present and everyone has to go through the HT pq before fighting HT.
you don't need the badge, just finis the prequests, and yes you still need 6ppl.
