The pilots requested permission to fly at a higher altitude to avoid the bad weather, but was denied because another aircraft was on the way.

No SOS signal was sent from airasia

Debris were found soon after.

At least one of the following likely happened soon after the pilots were denied permission:

1. Both pilots lost consciousness and so were not in the condition to send a SOS signal

2. The electronic equipment in the aircraft malfunctioned, and so sending a SOS was no longer possible.

Pilots are typically trained to make an emergency landing when it is needed, but that was obviously not possible in this case. This suggests that the pilots lost consciousness long before the aircraft hit the waters.

The plane was travelling in severe weather, so it's not unlikely that it was hit by lightning.
Usually, planes are required to have enough protection against the effects of lightning, so that it does not interfere (too much) with the electronics and there's no risk of fuel tank explosion.

Airasia is an affordable plane, so it may be the case that it was not properly protected against lightning (due to the cost).

w/e actually happened, my thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims.

well there was severe thunderstorms in that area. I'm guessing that is what caused the tragedy.

Most likely a mechanical failure

@Thiefy996: It's just this year. The article mentions that in 2014 alone, 1320 people have died in these accidents, which is the highest number since 2005.
