I just made a Mercedes and I'm wondering if the elves/Mercedes quest line is mandatory, important, or neither.

No, the only quests that matter are job advancement(s) at lvl 30,60, and 100. There is also one for the Unicorn mount, but that is just a single quest like the job advancements with no links.
They just give added benefits like Mounts and whatnot
Quests that have [Required] or [Job Advancement] are required. For everything else, there's MasterCard.
