Alternatives could be Suisei No Gargantia (ongoing), Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince (ongoing, misconception: this is not a chick flick), Valvrave the Liberator (ongoing), Sword Art Online (popular, 25 episodes with some OVA type special "Sword Art Offline" from the Blu-ray dvd collections that people upload, though it's mainly recaps of the previous episodes).

Ga-Rei Zero (lots of cutting off limbs, the story kept me interested though)
Golgo 13 (about a professional killer, described as an emotionless japanese version of james bond)
Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom (based off the game "Phantom of Inferno," about killers for the Inferno crime syndicate)
Claymore (also lots of cutting off limbs XD)
Gunslinger Girl (little girls trained to be killers, great story)
Monster (about a killer, awesome story. the cliffhangers will have you coming back lol)
Tenjou Tenge (been a while since I watched it. some crazy martial arts fights though)
Darker Than Black (killers with powers = awesome. It's more complex than that though don't worry lol)

Note: Pretty much all of the anime I just named are pretty violent in a graphic way, but still good. You have been warned about the violence. Also I guess it shows I like anime about killers lol.

Try "Date A Live" yes thats what its called lol. . .I found it strange too when i first found it. I have a huge anime list that i find good. Comedy, Romance, drama, action, horror, etc. . . . but also combinations of them.
