I would try downloading it through Steam. Much easier and it updates immediately and automatically.

Several people have mentioned getting that "can't connect to the servers" message lately.
My guess is the Pando servers have been down or heavily loaded so your computer can't connect to them.
About all you can do is wait a day or so and hope they fix whatever is wrong with the servers.
Or as Dontgongo suggested it's worth uninstalling PMB and starting over again.
Not sure if this would help but when this happened to me I reinstalled PMB and the download ran smoothly afterwards.
