Chemistry hybridization help

Ok this is what it says on my worksheet:
Note that energy restrictions in the atom limit the movement of no more than two electrons in the hybridization process. Use this reality to give a thorough explanation for the large drop in bond numbers between sulfur and chlorine.

for sulfur i got 2 bonds that it can make since it already has 6 in it's valence shell (hybridized)
for chlorine i got 1 bond since it already has 7 in it's valence shell (hybridized)

1 drop in bond numbers dosen't seem like a "large drop" can someone explain this to me? thanks.

I don't fully understand the question, but if you are asking why S forms 2 bonds while Cl forms 1 bond:
If you draw/or look at the molecular orbital diagram for S-S or Cl-Cl bond, and calculate it's bond order by 1/2[bonding electrons - antibonding electrons]
for S you'll get a B.O. = 2 and Cl B.O.=1. Which explains why S forms double bonds and single bonds for Chlorine.

Err...did you cover ionization energy yet? Because I'm thinking it should be related to the octet rule.

Edit: @Chemo12 Actually your answer's almost there. There actually is a large drop because the difference between two bonds and one bond differs by a pi bond. A single bond is composed of one sigma bond and a double bond will contain both a sigma bond and pi bond, hence why double bonds are much stronger and explains the big energy difference. It'd be a good idea to show the Lewis dot structure of both Cl2 and S2 to show the bond orders.

If you didn't cover ionization energy, this is the only reasoning I can think of. The question is also a bit confusing to me but I believe what your teacher's getting at is sigma vs. pi.
