To Everyone, Do Not strive to be mediocre
Seeing it a lot, being a senior this year and people pretty much given up and content with going to a crappy state college. I am not the smartest and am not going to be going to a fancy UC myself but DO NOT ever give up on life and be content with doing something halfway. If the world is against you PROVE THEM THE F(_)CK WRONG. STRIVE TO BE THE BEST and DON'T BE CONTENT WITH BEING MEDIOCRE.

Agreed man. I've watched it so many times since it came out... It really gets me going.
If they are content with being mediocre, why would they want to do more work? Some people are just like that. They don't want to be the best.
Doesn't make it any less stupid (srs). Being mediocre is literally the best way to make your life way more difficult and unbearable than it has to be. Being content has negative connotations for a reason.
@lukethebuc: Then you have no idea what I am talking about clearly. No way in my post did I say going to a crappy state college is a bad thing did I? If you want to strive to be mediocre and do nothing with your life so bet it.

Damn I watched that last night it motivated me to finish my essay. liked.
Deciding to be "mediocre" in one thing does not mean they're deciding to be mediocre at life. A couple of my most successful classmates were ones that only finished degrees as an afterthought. Also, unless they specifically tell you, you don't know their motivations. Maybe the crappy state college is all they can afford. Maybe its the only one nearby that offers their major. Maybe the crappy state college isn't as crappy as you think.
I agree with you man, education is very important. Your point was lost in people who got insecure that they didn't go to college and feel persecuted. Basilers, you shouldn't take personal offense when someone is telling kids that they should take school seriously. No one is trying to say that only college kids can be successful, he is just giving general advice.
i strive to be mediocre and have low standards so it feels cool when i beat them.
Where in my post does it say that academics is the only thing you should strive to be better in? Nowhere, you are just assuming because I gave an example. Clearly you missed the point and have no desire for a better education thats cool yet there is no reason for you to be mediocre. If you are really content with being ok at something for the rest of your life so be it, but just because MY post gives an example of education doesn't mean this only applies to education.
your starting sentence "Seeing it a lot, being a senior this year and people pretty much given up and content with going to a crappy state college." preety much sums up your entire point, the only thing your post tells me is that not going to a prestigious school automatically makes me mediocre, no where in your post do i see an opportunity to relate your statement to something else.
i'm not currently enrolled in any sort of education and i guess you would classify me with them? but i'm not satisfied with being mediocre. i have other goals and priorities. school isn't one of them, at least not right now. maybe stop judging others against your own standards of what makes you exceptional. i want to be the best in what i want to be the best in, and that doesn't really mean academics
"Strive to mediocre" lmao what? No one tries to be mediocre its just a biproduct of lazyness, or any other number of things like stress or anxiety that might cause one to neglect one's work.
To future college students--
I was once but a lackluster student, unremarkable in skill, unimpressive in wisdom and knowledge, hardly distinguished in the eyes of my peers. I was plagued with the base impulses of jealousy, shame and despair. My inner weakness allowed the laziness in my head to seep slowly into the rest of my body. There was nothing left for me other than to surrender myself to time, the one thing that begins, binds, and ends all men.
But I refused to accept this dismal fate. I believed with a fierce schedule that one's potential could be unlocked if only by strength of will and purpose; that my great power could emerge if I committed myself to training; that hidden skills could be discovered and developed if I listened to my textbooks. It was with this rekindled thirst for life that I lifted myself from obscurity, took up my pencil once again, and became the non-mediocre college student I am now.
Now, as I hear the last bell toll on my extraordinary semester, I see that the only skill I ever needed was the one that resisted being lazy.
I dreamed that I was dancing through my exams with my writing utensils, as if fate put us together in a tragically-timed waltz. I only thank the heavens for allowing a cute lapdog sit near me as I studied. He is an adorable lapdog.

Brah, the college admissions process is mindless. It's so mindless that there is an entire industry dedicated to messing with it. And to top it off, the people who handle admissions are not nearly as smart or discerning as the professors are. That's not to say that you should just give up, but that you should keep in mind that they are not good at figuring out how smart you are.
School doesn't determine if you're going to be mediocre or not.
Sometimes a life of mediocrity sounds relaxing after living an exciting exceptional one.
I spent most of my life on a dream which I recently fulfilled so now a mediocre "normal" life is desired.
Idk, mediocre means average in my eyes and I'm perfectly fine with living an average life.
I also agree with what @evyxx said in their post.
no, some people are good with meritocracy, much like yourself OP
no one strives to be mediocre. They just eventually find out that they are.

smell my feet
But in reality we are all mediocre. Just like you I'm 17 and in senior year, I can only get into a mid tier UC. UCLA,berkely or anything else is too far to reach. You can strive to not be mediocre but it's very difficult to actually break out of the barrier.
