New Phone Suggestions?

So I'm buying a new phone in like a week but I'm not at all sure what I should get
A few of my requirements:
- Has downloadable applications (esp. social media)
- Fast
- Can be customized in some way (not too complex)
- Can be used with cases or skins

What makes the Nexus different from the other mainstream phones?
@ Well the one I was viewing a few hours earlier I thought had died, but 10 minutes later it revived, so my bad
Yeah... I'm not very familiar with all the mainstream phones out there. I've only had experience with the iPhone 2-4 and the Galaxy S3
@ Well I've been so familiarized with the iPhone, I'm afraid if I get any Android device I'll just be completely confused & get frustruated
For the record, I have no understanding of the differences between the Android devices lol..
I need to study this up some more
Nexus devices come with the latest android OS installment, which will be KitKat for the new Nexus coming out. They come with stock OS, no bloatware, unless you buy them from a carrier which install some of their apps. Galaxy phones are very snappy but the touchwiz (heavy skin/ bloat) is very ram/cpu dependent. Currently iPhone5s is just a gimmick because it does not have enough ram to run the 64 bit processes it advertises, it's basically "64-bit ready" but since you can not increase the ram. I have nothing against Apple, but the iphones are sort of junk, once I saw how good 1080p display is on a phone I never went back to the 720p on the iphone, just my preference. App store, apple wins by a land slide compared to android. I can answer more things but I just wanted to give a quick heads up to some things to keep in mind.

Yeah, I understand. I've been playing with my mum's S4 and I personally don't like the Android OS as much as IOS, but I usually go for looks instead of functionality which is a bad habit I guess.
It's true that Android is better for customisation but there's always the option of jailbreaking your iPhone. Also, the iPhone has a bigger selection of apps and generally gets most apps first due to how much easier it is to make apps for IOS.
The screen size of the iPhone can also be a problem to some people compared to some of the newest Android phones but I personally like the compact design of the iPhone and the screen size doesn't bother me too much, it's perfect for having in my pocket.
You can still do cool things with the iPhone too unlike some peoples beliefs.

Why not iPhones though? :o
To simply put it, iPhones have less customization options when compared to Android devices. iPhone's are good for people who like a simpler and easier way of doing things, however.

If you can easily get the money I would go for an iPhone 5s, they fit all of your requirements.
But if you're wanting to change to Android I would personally choose the Nexus 5 (Just announced) or the Galaxy Note 3/Galaxy S4 depending on if you like a phablet or not.
HTC One is also a really nice Android phone, It's building quality/style is amazing in my opinion.
But yeah, I absolutely love my iPhone 5s, it's fast, simple and nice looking. Huge variety of cases too.

Well, comparing my iPhone to my friends Galaxy S4. The difference is quite a lot. On the iPhone, you can't download anything from the internet and can't customize your phone that well. On the S4, you can download movies on it, change your ROM (I believe that's how it's abbreviated) meaning, you can get more battery life, as well you can change your layout which is pretty cool. Also it has a 16 MP camera compared to iPhone's 8MP.

And for more info, S4 has a bigger screen, compared to 5S I believe.
You can do a lot more on the S4.

We have so many phone threads going on in Chat right now, and there's even a neglected iOS/Android forum section. You couldn't have opened one of those threads that answer exactly what you're asking?

And your requirements are way too general; any mid-range smartphone does precisely what you listed.

1. Every mainstream mobile OS has an app store.
2. Every mainstream smartphone is fast, unless if your definition of fast is unreasonable.
3. Every mainstream mobile OS can be customized in some shape or form.
4. Every mainstream phone has a huge selection of skins and cases.

You might as well have said "I want a phone guys."
