Maplestory Memories

HI, im CYCLONEDITS of Broa.

I hit 200 the other day for the first time and decided to write this ( sadly im currently still hellbanned and I am removed from the rankings == )
I have been playing Maplestory on and off for 7 years now, and I have to say alot has happened to the game since I started.
Please take a moment to read. * Nostalgia warning**

This is a little story of my experiences with maplestory.

To put into perspective, when I first started my level 26 warrior would hit anywhere from 300-1000 max with power strike. Fastforward a bit to when I became a page, MTS was still around, I purchased myself a purple scrolled glowing whip for 7900 nx. Back then for me, that was alot. But it was worth it. I had fun playing my page with the black crusader mail and glowing whip. I moved to broa a couple years later with my friends. I wanted to play a class that could hit multiple times per skill, and considered becoming a bowman, as I was inspired by the infamous hurricane. (even today, I have a tremendous ammount of respect to bowman adventurers) However I saw limitations in my time and money, and my pre-teen self decided to make a bandit for savage blow.

Level 46. Upgrading from my dragon`s toenail to the maple wagner was another memorable event. I had a blue pilfer, a 15 dex sauna robe, and even a pink adventurer cape. I had the most fun in Monster carnival, where I solo`d the rombots by myself. The sound of savage blow hitting 6 times, followed by the funny sound at the end always was satisfying. Looking back, the Maplestory back then was FUN. I am in grade 8 by now, and my friends and I had a sleepover to play. The new cygnus classes came out, and I remember my friend telling me how the dawn warrior could hit the 2 robo platforms on monster carnival. As tempting as that sound, I stayed with my bandit. That night we all did the gfa quest from ludibrium to earn a couple bucks. On the way down, we discover the hidden street dungeon with the drumbunnies. I decided I would help train my friend`s level 30 dawn warrior. After a good 10 minutes, we both agree`d that the exp was slow and we should loot the mesos and leave. As I made my way down the platforms, a chaos scroll dropped from a bunny. The Gaga`s agent even was currently in place, and wondered if the chaos scroll was a glitched agent scroll of some sort. It wasnt. The chaos scroll sold for 70 million mesos, which was an astounding amount of money as I never had over 10 mill at that time. Then, a bit of blood rushed to my head as I looked through the fm. The Zakum helmet. I looked pro as ever. Being level 50 and also at the top of the monster carnival foodchain, I had my zakum helmet, my wagner, a pac, and a bathrobe. Nobody would ever trade-win with me fearing that I could come out ahead any time. I partied with a firepoison that also had a zakum helmet, and the rising ace of monster carnival, the dexless nightwalker. Together we tore apart the enemy, leading by a whooping 800 points. I remember spamming f6 and f12 to further lengthen the gap between the points. I also remember spending a whole week on the free market for the Liu-Bei dagger. To this day, I still think the dagger is the sexiest thing alive. Long live the 3 Big Kings.

A couple years down the road, I made my 3rd job advancement as a chief bandit. Assaulter was the cb`s pride back then. I remember competing with a White Knight for a soon-to spawn mushmom. We both could 1-shot k.o the mushroom, but I had a trick up my sleeve. Assaulter would only activate in the presence of a monster, and so i held down the key and waited for the spawn. WIth a quick red-orange flash, the maple leaf cut in two, as mushmom spawned and died almost at the same time. Boom. Illbi. I felt triumphant, and the White KNight logged off, or changed channel as soon as he saw me loot. During the winter break, I remember training at C-2 (magatia) on rep exp. This was before bigbang, and you could sell the party rep buff as a service, and the 6 party members would line up at the fm portal while the one person payed the person selling the service. I mustave made a good 70ish mill doing that. I would run back to C-2 to find my channel still hadnt been taken. I would also do romeo and juliet pq. Meso explosion was quite the skill back then. For quick kills, the whole party would drop bags of 3333 mesos, and basically spawnkill franky when he spawned. Oh, not to mention the puzzle stage was 10 stages high, and there was no indicator or particle effect showing which platform you stepped on. Then BigBang rolled by.

I swear, the bigbang patch took a good 3 whole days for nexon to do. I felt unstoppable as I had acquired shadow partner AND flash jump. Sweeping mobs 150% faster never felt so good. My memory becomes ambiguous here, but several years later, I enter shadowerhood. The green sweeping assaulter and the gold luminescent boomerang step was cooler than ever. But in time, nexon would remove assaulter AND BoT. The old spirit of the Chief Bandit would die off. I enjoyed jumping off platforms, and using assaulter right onto another platform as I fell. I still held onto my pink adventurer cape, but It became obsolete with the new potential system. I used a 1% clean slate scroll, saying what the heck, I dont need this anyways. The .02% boom chance killed it. =( moving onto big bang.

The new potential system really shook maplestory by it`s roots. It destroyed the metagame of low-stat requirement/High bonus stat items. Level 10 theif top`s with 21 luck was the pro level gear. But with the potential system, every good item such as the face stomper was trumped completely. Although the game became fun with a new aspect of item potential, I personally believe the quote on quote Old Maplestory died when the potential system was released. Within a week, the godly standard went from a plus 21 luck top to a 31% luck top. Damage exponentially grew, and the damage-heavy meta was catalyzed by the potential system. Nebulites, then bonus potential, then set effects, boss damage and pdr. Then dupes, and the repeatedly released over powered classes that would become obsolete after their nerf.

I have played on the same bandit I made in the very beginning, CYCLONEDITS. When open advancement came out, I decided to transfer to a Dual blade because I had an excess of safety and protection scrolls on my mule accounts. I spent 70m total and made myself a 9-star 180 attack katara, and a 60 attack beryl heart. With a change in job and a boost in damage, I trained to level 200. However 200 is just another number now. Perhaps maybe equivalent to level 100 pre-bigbang. By now, I think I play because of the little community of Decadence and JianBiang alliance in Broa, where I have pledged loyalty for almost 3 years now.

Well if you have read this far, thanks. I have a couple things to say now. Value your friends and the community.

Special thanks to Decadence of Broa, and the guys back in Tenebre, and anyone else that remembers training with me all these years.

Happy Mapling.

Yeah, I have to agree. Its all relative. Now when I log on, I have to do commerci, Gollux and Red Leaf High.
Back then, I had nothing to do that reset at midnight, So my friends and I would try long abandoned party quests, hunt for drops, or all do the quesline for the goblin bat.

@sashimiftw
I remember, the one extra luck per level and the darkness familiar outdamaged the old dexless sins though. Oh I also had a diamond dagger at level 50 too
When i first started I had to sit at my desk for hrs just to get 13 INT on a character.
Rolling the dice was the worst. Many times I would get so close to 4s on str, int, and dex but I was clicking too quickly and missed it...

@ooga67

primarily the reason I transposed into a dual blade. Flashjump/assaulter is really nostalgic and fun

That's nice. I also have played on my shadower (hit 200 today) for a long time...I started before GMS launched in their beta version and kept coming back and leaving in intervals. I chose bandit specifically because of the 6 hit savage blow back then, the assaulter and BoT, and boomerang stab. Too bad BoT and assualter was removed.
