What Was Growing Up In The 90s like?

How was it different from our generation today? Did 13 year olds have cell phones, what did people do after school, were video games popular, how was school different, what was as popular as memes? Some questions that I hope you guys could answer and hopefully you could add more, I'm only 13 born in 1998 so most of my childhood was in the 2000's, so I'm interested. Also 1 more thing, would you rather be living in the 90's or whatever decade you grew up in, or this generation?

Saturday morning cartoons, Friday and Saturday night cartoons, playing outside, exploring the woods and creeks (going on adventures), The Legend of Zelda, Mario Kart, Super Mario 64, Super Smash Bros, listening to the radio instead of an iPod and a hell of a lot more snow back then. Granted, I'm one of the older Basilers and I was born in '91, so I only had about five to six years of which I can remember of the 90's. Most of Basilers speaking of the 90's were probably born between '94 and '96. However, being a 90's kid has its perks, just like being a 2K kid and I'd like to say I was a 90's and 2K kid.

<3 It was heaven.

Saturday morning cartoons? They didn't suck back then. >.<
Computers? Had no need for one, it was all about hangin' at the park, bro. (Well, I was still young, so I suppose it's natural to spend time outside, but still...)
Cell phones? No way, it's all about face to face conversations!
The winters were still cold, and we had lots and lots of snow!
Bus Drivers kidnapping Pokemon, and taking them to the junk yard to crush 'em. Hide your pokemon
Watchin' Dragon ball Z every single night, and then talking about it at school with all the kids in your school.
Sneaking out of my room at 11:30 P.M every Friday just to watch Gundam: Wing

Cellphones? Most adults wouldn't even have one, let alone 13 year olds. I still recall seeing 'bricks'. Pagers were the norm. Most kids weren't even familiar with the internet and no one would've known what the heck a meme was. Try loading a video or anything better than crappy jpeg on dial up speed...
What bugs me is people who were BORN IN THE '90s calling themselves "90s kids". A friend of mine born 1993 calls herself a '90s kid, which is ridiculous. Think about it. If you're born in 1993, you missed the entire first half of the decade, and you sure as hell didn't get the experience as a kid.

Now I was born in 1990, so I got SOME of it. However I still do not identify as a '90s kid, as the defining moments of my childhood were in the latter half of the decade, and mostly around/after y2k. True 90s kids were born in the 1980s and GREW UP IN THE 1990s.

...AND ONE MORE THING to anyone who mentioned Nintendo 64 in this thread. Totally NOT '90s. It's not Nintendo 64, people. It's all about Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. Also Sega Game Gear was the coolest thing ever, even if those 9001 AA batteries you put in it lasted all of about five minutes.

EDIT: Same thing with those talking about TV shows. To hell with Toonami and late-90s Nickelodeon crap. NOT '90s. Rather: Captain Planet, Doug, Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?, The Adventures of Pete & Pete, Fresh Prince, Ren & Stimpy, Nickelodeon GUTS, Legends, etc. Come ON, people...

What can you say, the term doesn't seem to be concretely defined, even look at the yahoo answers you find when you google 90s kid; however, I agree with you though. Most of basil I bet is likely around our age group, as gMS started around '05 and the game was directed towards middle schoolers. Assuming a notable portion of them are around that age and still basil, we're looking at an age group of 18 - 22 and younger, lol.

Most of my childhood that I can remember was in the 2000's.
I did remember going outside to play, but that was only sometimes. It could have been more, but I would always decline to play runescape/maplestory...
I did a lot of growing up "online."
I always wonder how my personality/life would be different if I wasn't introduced to runescape/maplestory.
Yeah, I do have a cell phone and a mp3 player, but I still try to use conventional things.
I don't exactly regret spending hours playing mmorpg's, but I wish I spent more time with friends playing outside and stuff.
Currently, I'm playing catchup with that in my teen years.
Actually, in the 90's, I do remember blowing bubbles outside and such. It's a vague memory though.
Technology isn't a bad thing, it's just how it's used..

I enjoyed the 90s much more than the later years yeah.. there was bullying back then but it's not seen then as much as it is now. The later generations of kids, a good majority of them, are a lot more rebellious, violent and an increase in underage sex has become more known. Of course it still happened back then, too.. but it's a lot more visible now in comparison to back then. Music and movies now are based off a lot on technology when in the 90s most music was actually sung by the performer, now they use auto-tune and things like that. The 90s to me was more.. innocent years I guess you can say. Sex was still indeed part of the media but it didn't swallow it whole like it is now, now that's all the media is about. That or causing drama. Drama has also swallowed the media much more then back when I was growing up.. just in general people have been starting to care less and less about the feelings of others as the years go by. Love hardly exists in the world, just lust.. marriages hardly last, etc.

Yup... it all started going downhill since 2000 I'd say. I miss it but, not much we can do. On a positive note, at least we can get DVD box sets at like Best Buy of our old favorite 90s cartoons.

As a kid who lived part of the 90's, I don't see what's so special about it; my childhood was great, but it wasn't because of the time I was born or because of a stupid comparison I could be able to make between me and older/younger people, it was because I was able to enjoy it.
Every generation will be the best to their opinion: you can say "The previous one sucked because ---- and the next one sucks or will suck because ----" but it's just because it's what you're used to. You were also one of those "stupid little kids who will know nothing about how great life could be" to older people (As most of you complain about today's kids), and maybe to younger people you're just a "stupid old person who can't adapt to new times so decides to complain instead" (As most of you see older people)

Did 13 year olds have cell phones, what did people do after school, were video games popular, how was school different, what was as popular as memes?
When I turned 13 (mind you, it was around 2005), I got a cellphone. Never wanted one, but I was given one so I could call my dad and tell him where I am after school. Also, sometimes I liked going to the library so I had to all him so he wouldn't worry. My dad got a cellphone though, and I would play snake on it Tamagochi was pretty popular. Didn't own any video games for real though, I came from a poor family x] Most of the time, it was just me, my Disney VCRs/books, and [Saturday morning] cartoons (Fox kids + Kids WB + PBS).
I was also very obsessed with getting a watch.
Back when I was in elementary school, we went outside A LOT. After school, I would go to the daycare next door where we had to do our homework, eat snack, play with whatever toys/board games, then go outside until 5 (if we managed to stay that late). I don't know if that's still the same now though O_o I also remember raising and learning about butterflies and crayfish with my class in 2nd grade, and there was this thing called the Hills Project where you learn how to play an instrument every other day. I picked the violin
I wouldn't know any memes. Didn't touch the computers until I was in 5th grade and I remember using Yahooligans xD (How the hell was I able to spell that LOL)

Also 1 more thing, would you rather be living in the 90's or whatever decade you grew up in, or this generation?
I don't mind either one. The transition was pretty okay for me. I don't get pissed at the fact young kids are getting cellphones. I guess I miss going to the park though :c

Just because you're born in the early 90s doesn't necessarily mean you're a 90s kid. That term is more reserved for slightly older folks that were more conscious of what was going on then.
Even though I am from the 90's, it is quite funny seeing 90's kids saying stuff such as television is so much better back than or we used to play outside with our friends. It is clear that shows such as South Park, Dexter, and Lost ( there are many more) are much better than something such as CatDog or Dexter's Laboratory. You are honestly purely basing your liking out of nostalgia. All the shows you mention are very nostalgic and I myself enjoy them but honestly they are not actually better than today's shows. They have very simplistic, immature, and plain awful substance in the show, that sometimes when I rewatch it, it makes me cringe.
Of course, they are much more technologically advanced as the older shows that we used to watch in the 90's. They were better in a sense that they didn't openly curse, have any racially insensitive jokes, and while they had some sexual innuendos, they were a lot harder to spot as a kid. While I do enjoy South Park, I would never let my younger sister watch it. Some parents don't realize that while they are cartoons, they aren't meant for children and let their kids watch it anyway. Then there's the child that will sneak around and watch it anyway because it's the "cool" thing to do. While yes, a lot of it is nostalgia, I wouldn't want my kids exposed to that kind of stuff. Teaches them bad things.

As for being in the 90's...

After school, many people would actually stick around for clubs. For instance, my elementary school had a sewing club! XD Around that time cell phones and the internet didn't really exist to kids, so we usually used the actual house phone to call people. I remember I used to sit up for hours talking to my friends. Beanie Babies and Pogs were big things to collect. And we used to actually go outside a play. I used to play DragonBall Z with my neighborhood friends. LOL

I was born in 1991, so my sentience as a child began about half-way through the 90s, but I'd still consider myself a child of that time. There was a whole lot more outside-time, and a lot less consumerism, aside from Pokemon cards and Gameboys. I should hope kids growing up these days share some of the activities I did as a child, like participating in many different sports teams, hiking trips for the sake of adventure, and when we wanted to communicate we would meet up in-person. I really hate that nowadays people (in general) are stuck in their rooms in front of a computer screen. I've evolved into that too, and it's horrifying.

Well, we didn't have cell phones... We had this magical device called a "pager"... It beeped and vibrated when someone intended to contact you so that you could use the nearest payphone to contact 'em... Sitcoms were more relatable, cartoons were edgier and more daring about their content, and stars weren't famous for just being famous... We were more active back then; didn't mind work and chores so much. Allowance was taken more seriously and budgeting habits were encouraged much more strongly because we'd work hard for it... I remember saving for weeks for a bicycle... you know, the ones with the little curved horn... I dunno what it was about the 90s, but it just felt like the candy was sweeter, soda was fizzier, and even the air seemed to smell more vibrant... sigh, I miss my childhood...

13-year olds didnt have cellphones. If you did, you were boss. There were videogames but they weren't as popular as they are now. Pokemon was actually good. Digimon and yugioh were the sht. We didn't worry about global warming so much. Polar bears didn't drown. Things were cheaper. Fashion wasn't such a big concern for preteens. Flare pants were in. Hoop earrings that could be used as bracelets too holla. You want to dress gangsta? Get a cap, a long solid coloured tshirt, some baggy pants and you're good. Those sweaters that were cut short to only cover your top part were in (for the girls). Y'know, you wear a tank top underneath. Popular as memes : Sex jokes.
I was born before the 90s.

Saturday Morning Cartoons like classic TMNT,Super Mario Bros, and Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. SNES was the best system at it's prime. Nintendo VS Sega Console Wars. Gameboy sold like hotcakes when Pokemon Red and Blue appeared. Crappy internet and pc, no fancy technology, we actually go outside and play.

Honestly all of you new kids and beyond are going to be spoiled with everything. Iphones, superior PCs, etc. But you guys will never see classic Cartoons again.
I agree, when I say I don't want a phone my friends get surprised. I might of never got to experience the things kids who grew up in the 90's in my childhood but I could still relate to some of it. I remember first getting a PlayStation 2 or playing my older brothers gameboy colour, and whenever I got bored my parent would just say go onto the computer, but I didn't want to. I still have the fat computer in my basement, I also remember seeing sailor moon but I really young, I think 3 years old? I loved cartoons, the only modern cartoon that I like watching is My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic because the producer of it also made power puff girls. It's not bad, better than Scaredy Squirrel or Total Drama Island...
