Is it worth getting this laptop? Alienware m17x r4

Hey guys, a friend of mine is trying to get rid of his laptop and is offering for me to buy it.

He's selling an m17x R4 Alienware laptop with AMD Radeon 7970m processor. Has only 6gb ram I believe. If it wasn't for a friend selling a laptop I would certainly have steered clear from Alienware or laptops but idk if it's worth it with what he's asking. He wants $830 AUD for it, and he barely used it. He used for a month in 2013 and didn't really touch it since because he's a boarder and our school blocks Steam. Idk if with $830 I can get a newer laptop for future games, even though I don't really game much. All I play is CSGO atm and anything can play that, I was only planning on playing GTA V on it.

Yes I don't game much so I know nothing about computers, and ignore bias against this brand but is $830 for a laptop/computer of these specs in 2015 too much? If mroe info needed I guess comment and I'll find out more.
I didn't misread and I never said it was old. Alienware laptops are good laptops and that's why they're expensive. Yes, there is a bit of a premium for the brand, but it is built with some quality stuff that won't show up on the spec sheet.

Again, for even $830, those specs are very good - comparable to its closest gaming desktop and a lot cheaper if you were to buy a new laptop with those comparable specs ($2000.)

So what I meant was, you're paying $830, now $810, for a high-quality gaming laptop that's unfortunately heavy and won't max out GTA V, but is far cheaper if you were to buy a comparable new laptop. Like I mentioned, it's a steal.

Thanks but you must have misread my post, I said to ignore the name and stigma that might come with it, the alienware name is not an upside to me. Was looking purely at whether those specs would be too much at 830(now 810 because he panicked when I became tentative). I agree that it's old though but apparently it runs at 50 fps on high in gta5, unsure about those sources.
Thanks to all posts up to now though, except ragingroxas who probably only read title.

If the laptop is in good working order, then that's a steal. Even trying to build the closest comparable desktop with an i5 and a GTX 750 Ti should cost you around $800-900 and that's not including the monitor and peripherals.

Here's a comparable laptop at a brand new retail price:

...I don't know what's wrong with Lenovo Australia, but this is not good to see: http://shopap.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series

The only thing Alienware does worse than its competitors is pricing. That's not the issue here obviously and you have a really good offer. The only "problems" the M17x R4 present to you are its weight - it is very heavy at around 4 kg - and it won't max out GTA V, but that's okay because it'll still play that game at the Normal setting.

Imo alienware computers are nothing more than over glorified toasters. They arent even worth the price they are sold for.

I hate to be that guy but Alienware sold out and imho its not worth it. I understand it has the name and a good price but I cannot stress how important it is to buy stuff like this new, and to do some heavy research. You can find a Dell or even an Asus computer for that price new. I wish you luck in your endeavors!
Hmm, if you're looking to play more recent or high performance games instead of CSGO and GTA V, I'd get a newer computer. For longevity you should go custom for sure because once you've gotten the pc itself, you only need to spend a few hundred every few years to upgrade it instead of buying a new computer and you can specify it for gaming if you want. http://www.logicalincrements.com/ is a good place to start for customs.
Thanks other person too

And what kind of games out currently do you think this laptop would struggle to play?

If I were to get this laptop I would have gotten it solely by my CS trade funding so it's not too bad. Also is that link for desktops or for laptops as well? I do prefer a laptop but a desktop will be good too.

1 more thing, how much would a laptop of these specs go for today? Maybe I might try get the price lower a little more. He wanted 1.1k at first but am whittling him down, he needs the cash to upgrade laptop himself, although the cheapest m17x r4 that sold on ebay was for 860 aud and the rest like a k even though it's so old.
Thanks for the response. I'm still unsure if buying an old laptop will be a waste.

I did a little research on this. You make a custom pc for around the same price with better power and performance, I'm an Aussie too, but I guess if you're looking for a gaming laptop this is alright for the price. Maybe try for a lower price? You could try canyourunit on it to see if it'll run GTA V. I'd say it might run it on a lower settings but it can run CSGO for sure. It has a low disk space though (500gbs) so you may need a portable hard drive.

Anyway, this is just my opinion. Good luck with it~
