Dota 2 and LoL's mechanics are so intrinsically different it would be stupid if you had to choose between one or another. For all intents and purposes, they're two entirely different genres to me.

well guess what dota 2 announced its f2p and all heroes are free and they are going to sell tickets and hats like tf2
HoN has Mid Wars and Scout, the greatest hero/champ of all time. It'll still remain less popular, but with recent changes to its F2P, it'll stick around due to a lot of mechanics/characteristics players like from it.
DotA 2 will be more popular than HoN and will have that large competitive scene due to greater resources than HoN.
LoL is like Maplestory. People will still play it regardless.
I think since League is the only one thats free, poor people will rule the contest.
if league of legends continues the climb in popularity that it has been since the competitive scene started then it will be both more popular and competitive
if league hits a wall and dota 2 gets big within the next two years then it will be more popular/competitive, but at the rate things are going, dota 2 is bitting the dust atm

I don't think HoN is going anywhere. It's too similar to DotA 2.
On that note, I don't think LoL and DotA 2 are going to be locked in some kind of mortal struggle. They're different games with different design philosophies, and it's not a "this internet is too small for the both of us" scenario.
Imo I think most hon players will transition to dota 2 since they are similiar games, and some LoL player with dota back ground will migrate too.
IDK, it's hard to guess.
I've never played HoN, but Dota 2 and LoL are both gonna be big at that time I think. LoL seems more casual, so it picks up a ton of players. Dota 2 is gonna pickup some really heavy competition though.
