Does a girl/guy like me?
There seems to be a resurgence of threads asking for advice about whether someone likes them or not. Thought I would share my experience/advice as an older Basiler who has gone through his awkward teenage years already. This is the simplest, most effective and usually least awkward way to find out.
Ask them out to do something on a particular date. Usually you will get one of 3 answers:
1) Sure
2) I'm busy, how about on <insert another date here> instead
3) Sorry, I am busy.
If they respond with 1 or 2, you're at least partially in. If they respond with 3, the bad new is that they most likely do not like you in that way, the good news is that it's pretty easy to play it off by saying that you were going to meet with friends there anyway (or something along those lines), basically so that she doesn't think it was supposed to be a date date, that way it will not be awkward.

Completely agree, but I think having a backout plan is the key of this approach, something which you don't really have if you ask them about their feelings directly.

It doesn't not require you to ask the person of interest as to whether they like you or not, which would be THE obvious question.
