I dont know what the plot is anymore
Between Nexon not filling in a lot of details, some obvious retcons and many other things... I have no idea what's going on anymore.
I get that some time in the past, the White Mage became evil and turned into the Black Mage, recruited a bunch of generals and tried to conquer Maple World. He was sealed away by the 5 heroes.
Or was it 6 heroes? apparently, it was really 6, and one was just forgotten.
Roughly 900-1000 years later, the Black Mage begins his return as his general re-emerge.
Or was it 100 years? The story can't seem to decide. Even MapleStory 2, which is supposedly set before the Black Mage, has massive modern cities with cars.
Athena Pierce was just a child when this happened, and she's still alive as a job instructor.
Or was she a teenager? Ellin Forest says she was a teenager who left Orbis at the time of the Black Mage's defeat. Ellin Forest is full of mistakes and things that don't make sense. Is Yuris a fairy? She says so but she doesn't have wings. She claims to be pregnant and thinks of naming her child "Kyrin", but the Kyrin who runs the Pirates looks human.
The Silent Crusade is a group founded to fight the Black Mage. In the course of you meeting them, your character develops a crush on one of them, and it turns out that Bastille had been a Black Wings double agent the whole time.
Oh, wait, that didn't happen. Instead we got a watered-down Maple version of the plot to Elder Scrolls Oblivion as a completely new version of the Silent Crusade.
Aran, one of the original heroes, was eventually unsealed from his curse.
Or is Aran a woman?
Aliens from other worlds had invaded the western region around Ludibrium, but they have nothing to do with the Black Mage. Another band of aliens invaded New Leaf City for some time, and there was an incident where time travelers came back and caused a lot of trouble, but that last one was undone with a history reset.
A doorway at the Temple Of Time led to 20 years in the future, showing the world overrun by the Black Mage and much of Victoria Island destroyed.
Huh? That's not the future anymore, just an illusion created by someone the Black Mage recruited? Huh, well...

My guess is it's not supposed to fit, different classes have different stories because nexon was too lazy to waste their time making it fit. Or not, don't want to be mean.

I remember when there was no story - because you were the story. You played, did quests, and the quests built the story. How you accomplished them, for instance. I took a few breaks from the game, and as I'd come back, people would say stuff about story. I just didn't get it. There isn't a plot to this game - at least, there wasn't a plot. As far as I've been concerned, there's just too many classes. Whether a class exists for something story-based has no interest to me. I see people complain about the plot and think, "Does it really matter? Does it change how you play? Do you read the text?" Yes, they go through the trouble of writing out all this dialog. I lose a bit of hope when I try to read it and see all the typos and errors, though... As a coding major in college, the format problems and such bug me too much to tolerate.
My point: To me, the game is a ton of classes. Apparently they have some broken story in relation to their existence, but that's not what matters to me. What matters is playing a game and having fun with users, not some story I have to read between the grinding it forces me to do. Slows down story too much...

@AckarRed: my point was that maplestory isn't a game for the story, it's for the gameplay. If they wanted to make it story based, it wouldn't be so easy to skip through chats and the quests would actually be worth it
Future Henesys was always an illusion. Didn't you ever do the quests?

I remember seeing a while back something about nexon saying that aran is a female, even though in a few pictures she occurs as a male.

I can think of many other games to play if I want a decent story besides this game, but making a game is no longer an excuse to warp the story this much.
I don't like "The Black Mage" storyline, I liked how each town or continent had its own story.
I dont think shade was an excuse to make a new class in the original 5 hero aran vid it showed a pirate hero and mercades was suppose to have bow they made a lot of changes since then. Maybe they witch shade with lumious cause pirates doesnt make sense for the past but then changed their mind again and brought shade back
Plot holes aside, I actually like it
Maplestory is more of a story that is made up as new contents come out... it is not a game to play if you want a story
General Plot Summary:
1. White Mage becomes Black Mage, he destroys Aurora and kills the Mercenary. His fallen light eventually becomes Luminous.
2. Six heroes along with Demon(Slayer/Avenger) seal away the Black Mage. Shade and Freud die. Shade is revived and is forever forgotten. All heroes become cursed and de-level back to lv 1 or 10. Luminous is partially corrupted by the darkness.
3. 1000 years pass, Aran wakes up, Mercedes wakes up, Phantom makes his appearance, Evan meets and bonds with Mir. Luminous wakes up. Shade wakes up
4. Cygnus Knights + Resistance conflict, Black Witch conflict. Adventurers, Cygnus, and Resistance form an alliance together eventually.
5. Almost every class in the game beats Francis up.
6. Hilia is at Azwan.
7. Old man Ark + Silent Crusade Storyline.
8. Transcendent of Time = Zero, Alpha and Beta break away from the mirror world.
9. Damien(Demon's brother) traps Alicia(The World Tree) at Root Abyss. Eventually, someone(You) defeats all the regular RA bosses and Alicia joins Cygnus and Shinsoo.
10. Mercedes fights super weak Orchid and wins.
11. Lotus is controlled by Gelimer, Lotus hurts Orchid and she is left to die. Orchid is saved and is recovering at the Resistance headquarters.
12. The Black Mage escapes his seal and destroys Maple Island but it's eventually fixed. He recruits Dream manipulator girl(Lucid?), Lucid creates Future Henesys and Twilight Perion. However, it's just a dream and does not imply the present Henesys/Perion will be destroyed.
13. Friends Story spin-off has no relevance to the plot line at all. But it's there.
14. Magnus starts havoc in Pantheon/Helisium. While he may be one of the commander of the Black Mage, Magnus is only working in his own interest for Gerald Damoor(Transcendence of Life in the other world)
15. Kritias rises up to the sky, Tower of Oz appears and is corrupted.
16. Black Mage is on Hiatus, but he is alive somewhere.
The only story I know is Aran's; he was frozen now he isnt.

100 years. GMS messed up, Yuris should be an elf, elves ages slower than humans, Kyrin is a half-elf.
For the most part, yes there are many plot holes.
Just gonna address a few of them that aren't actually "plot holes".
After mercedes was released, Athena was revealed to be an elf, who can live way longer than a human, so her being alive as a job instructor vs being a child back then technically makes sense. Bastille wasn't a double crosser, he was consumed by something that made him attack you, but he gets changed back after you beat him.
Regardless, I think you're reading too far into this. It's lore that isn't really lore lol. They didn't have a story in mind in the beginning from what I'm guessing.
