Anime & Manga Resource Package: Second Edition, Version 2.31 (19th edit).
Because anime is serious business.

If you are asking an anime-related question on Basil, all your questions will be answered in this post. Do not t|;dr on this; it would take months to gather this information without help. The version number is a reference to an anime, not a copy-pasta. No more spam about it, please.
[*]I could use help to assemble a manga recommendation section, or it'll never get done.
[*]The anime recommendation section needs to be updated with anime from 2010-2011. I will get to it one day, or after the fall season when all the god-tier anime airs.
[*]Currently working on a commonly seen terms list. It will be completed one day, hopefully.
[*]Feel free to contriboot' to this guide. Help out the new-friends so they don't end up going full-retard and talk about anime [like they know everything] even though they've watched like 10 crappy series.

[*]Tip: Use the search function and find anime related to the ones you like.
[*]Tip 2: Ignore anyone who recommends Bleach or Naruto. They are the plebeians of the 'anime world' who probably watch dubs on YouTube while cosplaying some fictional character; how unsightly and ungentlemanly. I bet they slurp their tea while in those fancy English parlours.

WATCHING ANIME
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[*]>>>STREAMING ANIME IS FOR LOSERS. IF YOU STREAM IT, YOU ARE A LOSER<<<
[*]THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A 'GOOD' ANIME STREAMING SITE: ANYONE WHO RECOMMENDS OP A STREAMING SITE IS INCORRECT AND SHOULD STOP SPREADING CANCER. (Crunchyroll, Anime Season, Gogoanime, Animecrazy, anime44, animefreak, etc. All those are streaming sites. STOP IT.)
[*]The only reason anyone should watch streams is if: they're just stupid, they don't know that downloading anime=better, or he/she is too poor to afford even a decent hard drive to store things with.
[*]Q: "Why are streams bad, yumtoast?"
[*]A: Ads, retardation in general, loading, plus the audio and visual quality is normally terrible. Here, let me give you an example:
TV rip I downloaded of Spice and Wolf II, episode 10. Tried to find the torrent again; took about 10 seconds. Look at Horo. Look at those lines! Beautiful!
TV rip stream of Spice and Wolf II, episode 10 I found on watchanimeon; also took about 10 seconds. Look at Horo now. What blurry lines! Almost as bad as 3DPD cosplay.
(Sorry, it's pretty hard to stop the video at the exact moments with MegaVideo)
Upgraded .gif comparison by malapo.
A much better Redline .gif comparison also by malapo.
720p is the best possible download choice, however to use judgement. If a series that was released pre-2000 has a 720p download available, it's most likely an upscale from 480p. Same goes for 1080p. If your monitor can't play it or if it was released pre-2008 really, then it's an upscale. Even newer movie and Blu-Ray releases are simply upscales and wasted bandwidth/storage space.
Also, HorribleSubs/CrunchySubs are direct rips from CrunchyRoll, as I'm sure there'd be some confusion in the fansub group name.
ANIME DOWNLOAD SITES:
Nyaa Torrents (Multi-purpose site for RAWs, SUBs, DUBs, untranslated LNs, OSTs, software, etc. Torrent only.)
BakaBT (similar to Nyaa Torrents)
Tokyo Tosho (also similar to Nyaa Torrents), well NyaaTorrents takes the torrent files from here, but the design of NT is better and easier to follow.
AnimeByt.es (you need to fill out an application)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Everything below this line are anime subs ONLY~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anime Out (Small-encoded anime)
Anime Take (DDL+Torrents)
Anime Buzz (DDL+Torrents)
Minitheatre (Small-encoded anime)
Anime Senshi (DDL+Torrents)
AnimeA (DDL+Torrents)

[*]If your college blocks torrents, I'm sorry for your loss. You'll be stuck with crappy 300kb/s DDLs. ;_;
[*](cont'd.)If you can't download torrents/hate DDLs, you can try XDCC. Though I haven't used it myself, it's another option.

[*]DOWNLOAD ANIME IN .mkv FORMAT. ANYTHING ELSE IS POINTLESS.

[*]To have your computer read .mkv formats, you MUST download one of these:
CCCP: Combined Community Codec Pack for Windows users (comes with MPC: Media Player Classic). This pack does everything for you. USE IT.
MPlayer OSX Extended for Mac users.
MCP: Media Player Classic for Linux users.
VLC Player for Mac, Ubuntu, Windows, and Fedora users.
MPlayer 2, also for Linux users.

[*]CCCP has the best support for hi10p, h264 videos. Everything else is inferior; only use the other links if your OS does not support CCCP. I will say this again: CCCP>MPC [OSX Extended], MPC and VLC

[*]Useful link: Fansub Wiki for those who watch subs.

[*]Protip 1: Don't waste bandwidth on crappy encoders who double/triple file sizes. THORA, COALGIRLS *HACKHACKCOUGHCOUGH*
[*]Protip 2: FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) is virtually useless if you don't have god-tier ears with an amazing audio system.
[*]Protip 3: Seed what you leech. Don't be that asshole who removes their torrent after they finish while setting upload to absolute minimum. If you have a crappy bandwidth cap, this is understandable.

MANGA

[*]WARNING: Danbooru and Gelbooru have 18+ ads. Make sure to go into their work-safe mode before searching/download adblock.

ANIME/MANGA-RELATED RESOURCES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[*]MaL: My Anime List Keep track of what you watch and whatnot.
[*]MaL Updater Helps keep track of your MaL.
[*]ANN: Anime News Network Reliable database.
[*]AniDB is another helpful data base.
[*]CCCP: Combined Community Codec Pack Linking it again because it's that important.
[*]Manga Updates Keep track of anime, manga, doujin, etc
[*]2chan For all you people who can read Japanese. A text board dedicated to all things animu, but threads are normally dedicated to crappy anime. It's well-kept and organized unlike its sister site.
[*]Wait, wait. I get banned for indirectly linking this site, but Reddit can be linked? I don't see how this is fair, mods, when Reddit sucks 100x more with its 3-y/o late memes. Plus I can link 2ch[an]. What's so bad about its sister site when the parent host is worse?
>Newf&gs and underb&s, gb2 >>/gaia/.
[*]2ch Not to be confused with 2chan, 2ch is a text board while 2chan is an image board (fyi, it's more popular than 2chan and of course, it's in Japanese)
[*]NicoNico English site. This was released recently, but they've higher quality anime streams than most sites plus anime/manga-related videos
[*]NicoNico Japanese version; more videos and much more popular, if you know Japanese, that is.
[*]Countdown to know when the next episode of _____ airs.
[*]Gendou for anime-related music.
[*]Baka-tsuki Light novel translation site for those who can't read the ones off Nyaatorrent.
[*]utorrent A bit-torrent client. Download it if you haven't already.
[*]Hong Fire. A site for downloading [translated+untranslated] visual novels and other miscellaneous games/software. Edit: This site no longer has download links, sadly.
>>>Google. THE REASON YOU SEE THIS POST IS BECAUSE OP WAS TOO LAZY TO USE GOOGLE TO FIND HIS/HER ANSWER. USE THIS SITE.<<<
